Marian R. Brady, 80

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at noon at the Calvary Ministries International for Mrs. Marian R. Brady, 80, who entered eternal life Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

Mrs. Brady was born Feb. 23, 1929, in Youngstown, a daughter of Thaddeus and Irma Lee Vanstory.

She was a graduate of Youngstown Public Schools and attended Youngstown College. She had been employed as a clerk with the U.S. Postal Service and was a loving homemaker. She was a lifelong member of the Calvary Ministries International and participated in the senior choir, culinary ministry, Sunday school and Keenagers. She also was a member of AARP. She loved to travel, having visited Europe, the Holy Lands, the Caribbean and Africa, as well as cruises. She enjoyed playing scrabble and working jigsaw puzzles.

Her husband, Adolphus, whom she married in 1955, passed away April 6, 1999.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory, her son, Suffragan Bishop A. Glenn (Angela) Brady of Overland Park, Kan.; a sister, Margaret Wilson of Youngstown; two granddaughters, Amaris J. Brady of Overland Park and Alexis G. Brady of Cincinnati; a special niece and nephew, Elder Jason T. (Brenda) Whitehead of Youngstown and Tamra Long of Cleveland; and a host of family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Thaddeus Vanstory; and two sisters, Vivian Whitehead and Gloria Snowden.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon at the church.

Paul D. Buday, 46

PETERSBURG – Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market Street in Boardman, for Paul D. Buday, 46, who died Thursday, Oct. 1, at the St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

Paul was born in Youngstown Oct. 21, 1962, a son of Frank B. and Noreen Ferguson Buday.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Corporal upon his discharge, and was employed as a technician at Dynasol Plastics.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, the former Patricia Howard, whom he married May 13, 2007; his seven brothers, Frank (Debi) Buday of Swansboro, N.C., Joseph (Bev) Buday and John (Mickey) Buday, all of Albuquerque, N.M., Tony (Kathy) Buday of Cleveland, Steve (Hiromi) Buday of Irvine, Calif., Chris (Tammy) Buday of Youngstown, and Mark (Betty) Buday of Largo, Fla.; his 14 nieces and nephews; and his 12 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday.

Following Tuesday’s services, interment will take place at Zion Cemetery in New Middletown, where a Marine Corps Honors ceremony will also be conducted.

Jose R. Carballo, 75

CAMPBELL – Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m today at the Wasko Funeral Home, with Father Gerald DeLucia officiating, for Jose R. Carballo, 75, who passed away Thursday morning at Shepherd of the Valley Nursing Home.

Jose was born Sept. 1, 1934, in Caguas, Puerto Rico, the son of Francisco and Julia Diaz Carballo, and moved to Campbell in 1950.

He was a pipe machine operator for LTV Steel, retiring in 1983.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife; the former Angeline Ramos, whom he married May 12, 1955; a daughter, Linda (Brian) Carder of Stow; a son, Michael Carballo of Campbell; two sisters, Conchita and Carmen, both of Florida; two grandchildren, Marilyn Deisner and John (Jolene) Hostal; and one great-grandson, Nathan Deisner.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Mike Carballo.

The Carballo family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends today from 1 to 2 p.m.

Nancy Evans Carothers, 83

BOARDMAN-Nancy Evans Carothers, 83, passed away in the early morning hours of Oct. 2, 2009, at Hospice of the Valley in Poland, Ohio.

Nancy was born Aug. 11, 1926, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the daughter of William and Catherine Evans.

She graduated from Sandusky High School in 1944 and attended Flora Stone Mathers at Case Western Reserve. She later became the society editor for the Sandusky Register Newspaper.

Nancy was married to Rodney P. Carothers Nov. 24, 1951. Their marriage continued for 43 years until his passing in 1994.

She was a homemaker and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Nancy, a loving mother and cherished nana, leaves behind two sons, R. Bruce Carothers (Pamela) of Cincinnati and Daniel E. Carothers (Brenda) of Lexington, Ky.; two daughters, Katie Carothers Kocon (Phil) of Poland, Ohio, and Jamie Carothers Auer (Tom) of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, William H. Evans III of Mentor; and 10 grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours, but a private family service.

William Lee Covan, 66

STRUTHERS – William Lee Covan, 66, passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 29, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center from complications following open heart surgery.

He was born July 6, 1943, in Columbus to William and Sue Covan.

He graduated from Grove City High School in Grove City in 1961, where he lettered in basketball and track. He then went on to graduate from Ohio Valley College in Parkersburg, W.Va., in 1963, where he was on the basketball and rowing teams.

While at OVC, he met his future wife, the former Norma Heil of Pittsburgh. They married Feb. 22, 1964, in Pittsburgh and spent almost 46 years together. They have four children, Brent (Cherie) Covan of Boardman, Bruce (Amanda) Covan of Struthers, Brandon (Kim) Covan of Austintown and Heather (Nick) Clinkscale of Struthers. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Camden, Connor, Cailyn and Cassidy Covan of Boardman; Allison and Zachary of Poland, Justin and Jack Covan of Struthers, Jordan Covan of Georgetown, Texas, Caden and Brylee Covan of Austintown, George Clinkscale of Struthers. He also would have welcomed his newest granddaughter, Leah Covan, in January of 2010. He is survived by a sister, Cindy (Steve) Loftis of Ocala, Fla.; and a brother, Donald (Gail) Covan of Tallahassee, Fla.; as well as five nieces and nephews.

Bill and Norma moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in 1964, where he began his career as a construction worker and carpenter. In 1966 after moving to Pittsburgh, he became a Route Supervisor for Nickles Bakery while also serving as a Deacon with the Whitehall Church of Christ.

In 1975, he became a full-time Minister after graduating from the Preston Road School of Preaching in Dallas. He began his ministry at the Church of Christ in Brookville, Pa., serving there from 1975 until 1979. He then moved to Indiana, Pa., where he served for another four years until 1983. Bill, Norma and family moved to Youngstown, first to Poland and currently Struthers, 26 years ago this November where he has served as the full-time Minister and Elder at the Struthers Church of Christ.

Bill enjoyed serving as Director of Senior Week for both Pennsylvania Christian Camp (while in Indiana, Pa.) and currently the Northeastern Ohio Christian Youth Camp in Lisbon. He was also President of the Board at NOCYC. Throughout his ministry, Bill held countless Gospel Meetings and taught classes at the Stark County Youth Rally.

Bill was a Godly, kind, caring, good-natured, fun-loving Minister, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He never met a stranger and to know him was to love him.

His hobbies included spending time with family and friends, basketball, hunting, fishing, gardening and traveling. He had a love for construction and met many wonderful friends through his part-time work of remodeling and painting. He was also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers, Boston Celtics, Ohio State Buckeyes and Poland Bulldog fan.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents.

There will be no viewing but family and friends may pay respects at calling hours at the Struthers Church of Christ on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 5 to 8 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at the church on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m.

Robert L. Haddle, 88

NEW CASTLE, PA. – A Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Fox Funeral Home, Boardman, celebrated by pastor Russ Adams, for Robert L. Haddle, 88, who died Saturday morning at Haven Nursing Home in New Castle.

Robert was born in Youngstown on Feb. 7, 1921, a son of Jesse and Matilda Becker Haddle, and was a longtime area resident.

He was a brakeman for P&LE Railroad and was a junk man who had a junk yard in Coitsville for many years. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served during WWII, and a member of the Struthers Eagles.

He enjoyed traveling and trips to Atlantic City and loved to make people laugh. He liked gathering things and giving them to his friends and family.

He leaves his two sons, George Haddle of New Bedford, Pa., and Bruce Haddle of Coitsville; a brother, Donald Haddle of Youngstown; a sister, Doris Kilgore of Florida; and three grandsons, Mike, Mark and Edward.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry Haddle, Walter Haddle, Carl Haddle and Frank Haddle; four sisters, Sally Connor, Jessie LaRossa, Sabina Servinak and Margaret Haddle.

Sara Louise “Sally” Jones, 69

CORTLAND – Sara Louise “Sally” Jones, 69, passed away Friday afternoon, Oct. 2, 2009, at her home surrounded by her family after an extended battle with breast cancer.

Born April 12, 1940, in Masontown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Kenneth “Clayton” and Sara (Lee) Crowe.

Sally came to the Warren area in 1960 from Waynesburg, Pa., where she studied education for two years. She retired in 2001 from Bank One, where she worked as a personal banker for 14 years. She was of the Presbyterian faith and was a devoted wife and mother. Most of all, Sally adored her grandchildren and enjoyed her time spent with family.

She will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Larry C. Jones of Cortland, whom she married July 7, 1962. Together they shared 47 years of marriage and two children. She is survived by her son, Jon (Stephanie) Jones of Warren; daughter Tami (Michael) Szuba of Howell, Mich.; five grandchildren, Ian and Alexa Jones and Sara, Ethan and Natia Szuba; a sister-in-law, Ruth Crowe of Warren; and two nieces, Sherry Manning of Warren and LeeAnn Tenney of Champion.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by a brother, Richard Crowe.

According to Sally’s wishes, she will be cremated.

The Rev. Marvin A. Barney will conduct a memorial service Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Roberts-Clark Funeral Chapel where family and friends may visit from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Silas B. Larson, 85

POLAND - Silas B. Larson, 85, died peacefully Friday morning, Oct. 2, 2009, at the Greenbriar.

Mr. Larson was born May 1, 1924, in Ames, Iowa, a son of Silas and Lillian Apland Larson.

He was a 1942 graduate of Ames High School. Following High School, Mr. Larson enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a P-61 Night fighter pilot and flew in the Pacific Theater. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with Three Bronze Stars, the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze Star, the American Theater Ribbon, the Victory Medal, and was honorably discharged in December of 1946.

Following the war, he was a 1950 graduate of the Iowa State College, receiving a Bachelor’s of Science in Ceramic Engineering. Mr. Larson worked as a Ceramic Engineer for Kaiser Refractories in Columbiana for 35 years, retiring in 1989.

Mr. Larson was a member of the Disciples Christian Church, where he was an Elder Emeritus and a member of the choir. He also was a member of the American Ceramic Society and the American Foundry Society. He enjoyed woodworking and golf, as well as various types of music.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Charlotte Dodd, whom he married Feb. 14, 1944; two sons, Stephen D. Larson of Eden Prairie, Minn., and John P. (Phoebe) Larson of Rockford, Ill.; one daughter, Mary (Angelo) Ciavarella of Poland, Ohio; six grandchildren, David (Elizabeth) Ciavarella, Stephen Larson Jr., Elizabeth Larson, Matthew Silas Ciavarella, Samuel Shisler and T. Lincoln Shisler ; two brothers, James (Carolyn) Larson of Madrid, Iowa, and David (Phyllis) Larson of Chagrin Falls; and one brother-in-law, Charles Dodd of Honolulu, Hawaii .

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Family and friends will be received Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Disciples Christian Church, 565 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, where friends will be received Tuesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m.

Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.

Brian Minnick, 24

GIRARD – Brian Minnick, 24, died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at his residence.

Brian was born April 13, 1985, to William Lynn Minnick and Laura Blue, both of Girard.

He attended the New Life Christian Fellowship Church and was a member of Sons of America Legion.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his son, Brian Michael Minnick Jr.; his fiance, Shana Mounsey; his stepfather, David Blue; his fathers fiance, Anna Marie Petrella; his grandmothers, Anna Dennison and Helen Minnick; his grandparents, Grant and Dot Blue; his uncle, Dale Dennison; aunts and uncles, Steve and Wanda Dennison and Jim and Michelle Minnick; and several cousins.

Services will be held on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Blackstone Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. prior to the service.

Ashley Jean Monro, 25

HOWLAND – Ashley Jean Monro, 25, a vibrant, intelligent, beautiful and loving young woman, found her peace when she passed away Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009.

Ashley was born April 12, 1984, in Girard, the daughter of Rex Thompson and Susan Dixon Thompson.

While growing up in Girard, Ashley participated in youth softball leagues and sang in the children’s choir at the Girard United Methodist Church, where she was very active in youth group. She excelled in school, soaking up knowledge with enthusiasm and making so many friends just as quickly.

After graduating from Girard High School in 2002, Ashley met and married Dmitri Monro in 2004. Together they have one son, Nikos, for whom they beam with adoration and pride.

Ashley was currently a student at Youngstown State University, enrolled in the school of nursing. This choice of study further displayed her unselfish and compassionate nature to all who knew her.

Ashley will be passionately missed by her great many friends and family, including her parents, Rex Thompson and Susan Dixon Thompson of Greencastle, Ind.; her husband, Dmitri Monro of Howland; and especially so by her son, Nikos. She was especially proud of her best friend and sister, Brittney Thompson, and her loving brother, Christopher Thompson, both of Greencastle. She also leaves her paternal grandparents, Georgia and Eugene Stefani of Howland; her great-grandmother, Dorothy Rex of Newton Falls; and her many aunts, uncles and cousins, whom she loved so much. Their hearts and souls will forever carry a void left by her early departure from their lives.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Donna Jean and Robert F. Dixon, and her paternal great-grandfather, Thomas Rex.

Friends may call to pay their respects on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard.

Michael “Mike” Olinik Jr., 69

GREENBUSH, VA. – Michael “Mike” Olinik Jr., formerly of Austintown, fell asleep in the Lord on Sept. 25, in Tucson, Ariz., while visiting family.

Michael was born Dec. 1, 1939 in Youngstown to Michael Olinik Sr. and Mary Berdy, who preceded him in death.

He was a 1957 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He worked for over 18 years for the CSX (B&O) Railroad as a carman. He was a member of St. Anne’s Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Church, where he retired as the caretaker before moving to the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Shirley of Greenbush, whom he married May 4, 1963; children Colonel Catherine (David) Shutak of Clarksville, Tenn., son Kenneth of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Judi (James) Haynes of Tucson; brother George of Austintown; grandchildren Caitlin Shutak, Stephanie Shutak, Jacob Shutak, Indigo Haynes and Sienna Haynes; and nephews and niece Christopher Olinik, Amy Olinik and William Olinik. He also leaves behind two friends who were like brothers to him, Ron Boarts of Hubbard and Tommy Owens of Greenbush.

Ethel M. Perkins 76

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. at the New Hope Baptist Church for Mrs. Ethel M. Perkins, 76, who was called home to be with the Lord Sept. 29, 2009, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Mrs. Perkins was born Aug. 8, 1933, in Youngstown, a daughter of Ernest and Annie Glover Barnes.

She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church and its choir. A homemaker, she especially loved taking care of her family.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory, her husband of 57 years, Jessie, whom she married March 22, 1952; three children, Michele Cole and Lamont Perkins, both of Youngstown, and Tonya Foster of Michigan; three sisters, Mary Hutchinson, Janet Queener and Anna Reeves, all of Youngstown; seven grandchildren, Tinika, Qiana, Shawn, Christopher, Brandon, Darrione and Brandi; seven great-grandchildren, Serenity, Madison, Christopher, Blake, Patrick, Shelton and Raven; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Calvin, Bailey and Arthur; and two sisters, Rose Hart and Bessie Spires.

Edwin Harrold Rohrer, 83

COLUMBIANA – Memorial services will be held Sunday, Oct. 18, (time to be announced) for Edwin Harrold Rohrer, 83, who died Friday evening at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

Edwin was born June 4, 1926, in North Lima, the son of Carrie and John Harrold Rohrer.

He was a graduate of North Lima High School, and later served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European theater. He graduated from The Ohio State University, with his degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked for the Enterprise Company (the Stamets Co.) in Columbiana. In 1966, he formed his own company, Rohrer Associates Inc., in the Poland and Boardman areas until he sold the company in 1986. During his professional career he was awarded three patents.

He was a past member of the Columbiana Presbyterian Church and a current member of the Mt. Olivet United Church of Christ, where he has served as a trustee and treasurer of the church for many years. He was a member of the Boy Scouts and was a parent volunteer when his son, Donald, was a member. He was an over 10 year member of the Kiwanis and a life member of the Professional Engineers Society, Mechanical Engineers Society and Veterans of the 12th Armored Division. Ed also enjoyed gardening and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, the former Janet H. Mayes, whom he married in 1949; five children, Virginia (Jim) Kaiser, Evelyn Best, Dr. Elizabeth McEvoy (Fred) Specht, the Rev. Helen McEvoy (John) Freese and Donald (Vicky) Rohrer; grandchildren, Thomas and Daniel Freese, SFC-E7 Jason (Pamala) Best, stationed in Iraq, and Andrea Best; great-grandchildren, Mryanda, Jacob, Jarrett Best and Mark and Marshall Calvin; and seven other great-grandchildren; and his special canine friends, K.D., Candy and Lexi.

The family has requested that contributions be made to the Mount Olivet United Church of Christ in North Lima’s Memorial fund in Ed’s memory.

Richard D. “Dick” Ruehle, 67

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – Richard D. “Dick” Ruehle, 67, died Oct. 1, 2009.

Raised in Poland, Ohio, Dick was a graduate of Thiel College. He joined the Peace Corps, serving two years in Ecuador, served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968 and received his MBA from The Wharton School (Univ. of Penn). He had a career in commercial banking and served most recently as Vice President, Credit Risk Review at TD Bank in Cherry Hill. He coached in Cherry Hill for many years, including Babe Ruth, Little League and American Legion Baseball.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Kathleen Stucy; his son, Michael Ruehle of Cherry Hill, his daughters, Heather Prudhon of San Jose, Calif., and Alexis Valkenburg of Dubai UAE; his mother, Alice; his brother, David Ruehle of Poland, Ohio; four grandchildren, Paige, Jackson, Caroline and Quinn; and nieces Tamara Jablonski of Twinsburg and Andrea Kraynak of Poland, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lester Ruehle.

Visitation is today from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Schetter Funeral Home, 304 W. Rt. 70 in Cherry Hill, and Monday morning from 10 to 10:45 a.m. in St. Andrew's United Methodist Church 327 W. Rt. 70 in Cherry Hill, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m.

Interment will be at Colestown Cemetery in Cherry Hill.

Joseph W. Sabol, 64

CANFIELD – Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel for Joseph W. Sabol, 64, who passed away Friday at The Cleveland Clinic.

Joe was born July 4, 1945, in Youngstown, a son of the late Michael and Magdalene (Tinar) Sabol.

He retired as a self-employed mason, attended the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and was a member of the Bricklayers Union Local 8. In his spare time, Joe enjoyed antique cars and carving bricks.

He is survived by his wife, the former Charlene Baringer, whom he married June 11, 1965; three children, Adam Sabol of Lake Milton, Jennifer (Sean) O’Hara of Austintown and Mandy Laurie of Canfield; two brothers, Michael (Helen) Sabol of Berlin Center and John (Marcy) Sabol of Austintown; and two granddaughters, Samantha Skowron and Emily O’Hara.

Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by a sister, Magdalene Hodges.

Betty Lou Travis, 75

PARKERSBURG, W.VA. – Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home in Parkersburg for Betty Lou Travis, 75, who died Wednesday morning, Sept. 30, at her daughter’s residence.

Betty Lou was born June 11, 1934, in Belleville, W.Va., a daughter of the late John S. and Armeda Marie Flinn Smith.

She was a member of the Grace Brethren Church and had worked in customer service and as a bookkeeper for Best Photo and Nashua Photo in Parkersburg, retiring in 1999.

 She leaves her husband, Leon D. Travis, whom she married Aug. 14, 1952; a son, R. David (Karen) Travis of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Becky L. (Rick) Sugden of Struthers; two sisters, Jo Ann (Ralph) Newbanks of Charlotte and Donna Jean (Dan) Ciaramella of Fort Myers, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

 The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, 525 N. Broad St., Canfield, OH 44406 or to PALS (Missionary Outreach), 900 Calkins Road, Rochester, NY 14623.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Forum Health Northside Medical Center, especially M.I.C.U. and 3 N.W., for their care and support given to Betty and her family.

Opal H. Wright, 83

NILES – Opal H. Wright, 83, died at 1:25 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at Gillette Nursing Home in Warren.

She was born Sept. 9, 1926, in Philippi, W.Va., the daughter of David and Ivey Bennett Payton

Opal was a homemaker and enjoyed reading and flowers.

She will be deeply missed by her husband, Thamer D. Wright Sr., whom she married Aug. 26, 1944, and with whom she just celebrated 65 years of marriage; a son, John Wright of Brandon, Miss.; three daughters, Karen Cromley and husband Charles of Niles, Dianna Dallas and husband Richard of Cortland, and Alice Verlenich of Howland; eight grandchildren, Gretchen Gualandi, Charles Cromley, Robin Dallas, Richard A. Dallas and wife Julie, Samuel Verlenich, Katie Egner and husband David, Adam and Lyndsey Wright; and nine great-grandchildren, Haley and Leah Egner, Bryce Dallas, Samantha and Angelina Gualandi, Elizabeth and Victoria Cromley, Bobby and Roy Markwell.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thamer D. Wright Jr.; an infant granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Wright; a son-in-law, Sam Verlenich III; five brothers; and two sisters.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at The Joseph Rossi & Sons Funeral Home in Niles.

Funeral Services will be held 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Joseph Rossi & Sons Funeral Home in Niles with Chaplain Carol Yablonovsky officiating.

Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
