George H. Rood, Sr., 69

SALEM – Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for George H. Rood Sr., 69, who died Monday evening with his family by his side at Select Specialty Hospital in Boardman.

He was born Dec. 16, 1939 in Ashtabula, the son of Henry W. and Ruth L. (Hawes) Rood.

He was a 1958 graduate of Ashtabula High School. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army in which he enlisted after graduating from high school.

He was the owner and president of Rood Trucking in Mineral Ridge for the past 45 years.

He was a member and preaching Elder of the New Hope Christian Church in Austintown. He also owned and operated a pull truck he called “A Rood Awakening” and he enjoyed cutting grass and taking care of his yard.

George was a true family man and he loved his family with all of his heart.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Diane E. Powell, whom he married Aug. 8, 1959. He also leaves behind seven children, George (Angelia) Rood Jr. of Austintown, Jennifer (Randy) Newell of Springfield Township, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Rood of Austintown, Douglas Rood of Buffalo, Julie (Alan) Butler of Cincinnati, James Rood of California and Gail (Kevin) Keaney of Flowery Branch, Ga.; 28 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sandra Guernsey; and a granddaughter, Kayla.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Elkhorn Valley Christian Service Camp in Bergholz.

Anthony Robert Gonzalez, infant

CANFIELD – Private funeral services will be held for Anthony Robert Gonzalez, infant, born silently Saturday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Anthony is survived by his mother, Jasmin Kulikowsky of Canfield; his father, Anthony Gonzalez of Campbell; his maternal grandparents, Diane (David) Kohler of Canfield and Nick Kulikowsky of Charlotte, N.C.; his paternal grandparents, Susan Gonzalez and Antonio Ortiz of Campbell; his maternal great-grandmother, Delys “Janice” Dempsey of Boardman; his paternal great-grandmothers, Betty Raymond of Campbell and Lenore Ortiz of Youngstown; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Anthony’s angels in waiting are his maternal great-grandfather, Robert Lee Dempsey; his paternal great-grandfather, Russell Raymond; his great-uncle, Robert Lee Demspey Jr.; and great-aunt, Karen Raymond.

Artis McKinley Henderson Sr., 85

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Third Baptist Church, for Mr. Artis McKinley Henderson Sr., 85, who entered eternal rest Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at the Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Mr. Henderson, lovingly known as “Mack,” was born Oct. 12, 1923, in Ft. Wayne, Ind., a son of Rev. Pervis and Savannah Taylor Henderson.

He had been employed with General Fireproofing, Youngstown City Schools and was a self-employed plasterer. He was a member of the Third Baptist Church, its Outreach Ministry, Sunday school and Men’s Unit. He was a former member of the Union Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board. Artis was a member and past Master of the Covenant Lodge No. 59 P H F & A M, a member of and past Potentate of Al-Asir Temple 210, a 32nd Degree Mason with Belzaleel Consistory No. 15, and a member of the NAACP.

He leaves to cherish his beloved memories, two children, Armilla Kay Henderson of Marietta, Ga. and Artis M. Henderson Jr. of Youngstown; a brother, Rev. James Henderson of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Florence Henderson of Galveston, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Theasel and JohnDell Henderson.

Friends may call Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home, with Masonic services being held at 6:30 p.m. and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Dr. Gordon C. Hopes

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be services at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at the First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown for Dr. Gordon C. Hopes, known as “Doc,” formerly of Hubbard, who passed away Monday, Oct. 5, at Park Vista Retirement Center.

He was born April 28, 1923 in Youngstown, a son of Charles J. and Laura J. Coe Hopes and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a 1942 graduate of Hubbard High School and a 1950 graduate of Ohio State Dentistry School. He practiced dentistry and had his own practice in Hubbard for 47 years, retiring in 1997.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown, a 50-year member of Corydon Palmer Dental Society, and a former member of Hubbard Kiwanis Club.

He was an accomplished singer and sang in the church choir of the Immanual Baptist Church for many years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II in the 324th Infantry.

He married his childhood sweetheart, the former Marjorie E. Knuth, on July 26, 1945. She passed away Feb. 11, 2003.

He is survived by his daughters, Karen Lee (Michael) Razo of Canfield, Judith Ann (Gary) Smith of Struthers and Barbara Jean (Stephen) McCumber of Cortland; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Thomas Hopes; and a sister, Evelyn Hopes.

There will be calling hours Thursday, Oct. 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.

Burial will be at Hubbard Union Cemetery.

Sarah Frances Kennedy, 87

YOUNGSTOWN – Mrs. Sarah Frances Kennedy, 87, departed this life Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Mrs. Kennedy was born Jan. 22, 1922, in Gadston, Ala., a daughter of William H. and Alder B. (Welch) Dupree.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church.

She leaves her husband, Homer C. Kennedy, whom she married May 12, 1975; her children, Robert L. Kennedy of Kent and Bennie (Mary) Powell of Atlanta; daughter-in-law, Rosalind Kennedy of Youngstown; her grandson, Christopher Powell, with the Army; and her brother, Ernest (Dorothy) Dupree of Gadston.

Besides her parents, a son, Rev. David Kennedy; three brothers, Howard, Ed and Herbert Dupree; and a sister, Earlene Dupree, preceded her in death.

Friends may call from noon to 4 p.m. on Thursday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home Inc.

Funeral services will he held on Monday at the Gadston Memorial Funeral Home in Gadston.


Dr. Donald L. Kweder, 81

INDIANAPOLIS – Dr. Donald L. Kweder, 81, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, Oct. 4, 2009.

He was born in Cleveland on June 13, 1928, the son of Helen and Victor Kweder.

Always an outstanding student, “Don” was class valedictorian of St. Georges Catholic School and the school’s youth spelling bee champion. In high school, he became interested in the sport of fencing, later becoming a nationally acclaimed fencer and alternate on the 1948 Olympic Fencing Team.

Don began college at age 16 at Western Reserve in Cleveland and graduated Cum Laude in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa. He later graduated from The Ohio State University School of Optometry placing 3rd in his State Board Exam. From 1954 to 1994, Don had a successful optometry practices in Cleveland, Niles and Youngstown.

After 40 years of dedication to his profession, Don retired to enjoy his many passions with his wife, Jan. His interests included the love of Cleveland area sports teams (the Indians, Browns and Cavaliers), as well as enjoying playing golf, tennis, bowling and billiards. He was a fan of opera, theatre productions and was an avid reader, studying philosophy, politics and religion. Don and his wife of 53 years also enjoyed traveling the country together.

Don was an active sponsor of Children’s International Relief Services, the Guiding Eyes for the Blind and other charitable organizations.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janet Kweder of Indianapolis; sons, Jeffrey (Julie) Kweder of Carmel, Ind. and David (Kathy) Kweder of Long Branch, N.J.; grandchildren, Jaclyn, Ashley, Andrew and Joseph Kweder; stepgrandchildren, Peter, Caitlyn and Kevin Gray; sister, Bertha Durbin; and niece, Patricia Barry.

A memorial calling for Don will be held on Thursday, Oct. 8, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center, 325 E. Carmel Drive in Carmel. A private service for family will follow.

A memorial service celebrating Don’s life will be held at a later date in Cleveland.

Leon J. Manos, 94

ROCKWOOD, TENN. – Leon J. Manos, 94, formerly of Walker Court in Poland died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at the Renaissance Terrace Care and Rehabilitation Center in Harriman, Tenn.

For the past year, he had been residing with his daughter and son-in-law in Tennessee.

Mr. Manos was born Feb. 28, 1915, in Youngstown, a son of John and Ethel McCurdy Manos.

He was a 1933 graduate of Poland Seminary High School and a member of the Poland United Methodist Church.

Mr. Manos worked as a Stationary Engineer for Ohio Edison for 40 years, retiring in 1976. He was an avid golfer who especially liked playing at Mill Creek Park. Mr. Manos was “Mr. Fix-It” in his neighborhood. If he couldn’t fix it, no one could. Mr. Manos also enjoyed woodworking and doing crossword puzzles with his beloved wife.

His wife, the former Margaret F. Healey, whom he married in Nov. 16, 1947, died June 17, 2005.

Mr. Manos is survived by two daughters, Elaine (Jeff) Kreil of Rockwood and Linda (Jim) Schuricht of Estes Park, Colo.; one son, Dale (Sue Ann) Manos of Atlanta; and two grandchildren, Jennifer (Dan) LaCoe of Ft. Lupton, Colo. and Marc (Erin) Schuricht of Denver.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Family and friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, where funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m.

Friends will also be received Friday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Poland Riverside Cemetery.

Stella Rose McLean, 76

POLAND – Stella Rose McLean, 76, died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

Mrs. McLean was born Nov. 21, 1932 in New Castle, Pa., the daughter of Frank and Elvira Caiazza Merlino.

She was a member of St. Dominic Church.

Mrs. McLean was a talented artist and sculptor and won numerous awards for her artwork. She was a devoted housewife, she loved decorating, fashion, and loved shopping, especially at T.J. Maxx. She loved spending time with family, friends, her dog, Nicky, and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Robert M. McLean, whom she married March 15, 1969; one son, Robert F. McLean of Aliquippa, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Christine Valdez of Cypress, Calif. and Shari Brewer, of Troy; one sister, Marie Merlino of New Castle: and three grandsons, Parker and Noah Anderson of Aliquippa and Raymond Valdez of Cypress.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Constance Domenick, Linda Maciarello, Josephine Relo and Susan Creaturo; and two brothers, Nicholas Merlino and Guy Merlino.

Family and friends will be received from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at St. Dominic Church, 77 E. Lucius Ave., Youngstown, OH 44507, where memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at St. John Baptist Cemetery in Lowellville.

Rose Marie Nenadich, 82

AUSTINTOWN – Rose Marie Nenadich, 82, died Oct. 5, 2009 at Mahoning Valley Hospital, Trumbull Campus after falling at her home on Aug. 28, 2009 and several surgeries.

Rose was born Nov. 11, 1926, in Carbon, Pa., a daughter of Joseph and Lucy Dalmatin Nenadich.

She lived in Carbon until 2003, then she moved to Austintown.

She was a 1944 graduate of Bessemer High School. After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for the Department of the Navy and then moved to New York City, where she worked for a fashion house as a hand model until 1952. Upon her return, Rose worked as a secretary for Republic Steel and Truscon, retiring in 1982.

She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish in Hillsville, Pa., now called the Christ the King Parish, and St. Joseph Church in Austintown. At St. Lawrence, she belonged to the women’s group, Christian Mothers and worked in the office. She also belonged to the Senior Citizens Group at St. Joseph Church. Rose enjoyed playing cards and bowling in her earlier years.

She leaves her sister, Lena Kovalan of Youngstown; six nieces, Kathleen Sullivan of Youngstown, Jane Kovalan of Youngstown, Patricia (Scott) Kovalan Shope of Charlotte, N.C., Nancy (Mark) Iovenette of Rocklin, Calif., Mary (Joseph) Schesler of Youngstown and Joanne Antigua of Elk Grove, Calif.; four nephews, Michael (Deborah) Sullivan of Waco, Texas, Joseph Sullivan of Youngstown, John (Debbie) Kovalan of Vermilion and Robert (Carla) Kovalan of Austintown; six great-nieces; six great-nephews; and seven great-great- nieces and great-great-nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Sullivan, Lucille Rose and Mary Ullery; a brother, John Nenadich; and four brothers-in-law, Michael Sullivan, Harry Rose, Ted Kovalan and Morris Ullery.

There will be private calling hours for the immediate family.

A funeral Mass will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Christ the King Parish in Hillsville. Interment will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery in Hillsville.

The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Rose’s name to a charity of their choice.

Cheryl A. O’Rourke, 44

HUBBARD – Cheryl A. O’Rourke, 44, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at 11:25 p.m. at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Philadelphia, Pa. 

Mrs. O’Rourke was born March 19, 1965 in Youngstown to Dale O. and Shirley (Smith) Fisher. 

Cheryl was a 1983 graduate of Brookfield High School and the Trumbull Career and Technical Center. During high school, she worked for Williams IGA in Vienna and had continued work there until her illness prevented her, as the office manager. She loved being outdoors and enjoyed spending time gardening, as well as decorating her home for the different seasons throughout the year.

Mrs. O’Rourke is survived by her husband, Keith, whom she married on Oct. 27, 2006; her son, Christopher Myers; two daughters, Crystal Myers and Rebecca Myers, all of Hubbard; her mother, Shirley Fisher; her two brothers, Dale R. Fisher and his wife, Jackie and Dean A. Fisher and his wife, Joy, all of Brookfield. Cheryl also leaves behind her two nephews; three nieces; and her grandson. 

She was preceded in death by her father in 2006.

Calling hours will be held Thursday evening at the Lane Funeral Homes, Madasz Chapel in Brookfield from 4 to 7 p.m. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jeff Seeger officiating. 

Burial will be at Brookfield Township Cemetery.

The family suggests that contributions be made in Cheryl’s memory to her family who will be establishing a memorial fund in honor of her courageous battle with cancer.

John R. Pignatore, 93

NEW MIDDLETOWN – John R. Pignatore, 93, formerly of Cleveland Heights, died Oct. 5, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

Mr. Pignatore was born July 31, 1916 in Wellsville, a son of Anthony and Virginia Pireo Pignatore.

A graduate of Wellsville High School, Mr. Pignatore worked as a car inspector for the former Pennsylvania Railroad for 40 years, retiring in 1976. He also worked part time in maintenance at night for the Cleveland Public School System.

Mr. Pignatore was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II from 1943 until 1946.

He was a former member of the Christ the King Parish and a member of the VFW Post 1500, both in Cleveland.

Mr. Pignatore’s greatest love was his three grandchildren, which he affectionately called his “three aces.”

He had a passion for education, attending classes at Cleveland State after retirement, reading anything he could get his hands on, and instilling the importance of it in his grandchildren. His other hobbies and interests included music, especially artist Sarah Brightman, playing the lottery, watching sports, particularly the Cleveland Indians and making pancakes for his “three aces.”

His wife, the former Nancy Cafarelli, whom he married Oct. 5, 1946, died Jan. 23, 1994.

He leaves his daughter, Annette Bailey of Lowellville; a son, James Pignatore of Cleveland; and his two granddaughters, Jennifer and Nancy Bailey, both of Lowellville.

Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Adam Bailey; three sisters, Lucy Simko, Millie Rodi and Rose Villani; and seven brothers, Albert, Rocky, Mike, George, Charlie, Joe and Frank Pignatore.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at All Souls Cemetery, 10400 Kirtland Chardon Road, Chardon, OH 44024.

Charles R. “Buzz” Replogle, 88

VERO BEACH, FLA.– During World War II, Charles Replogle was stationed at Melbourne Naval Base. Later in life since he loved this area, he returned to make Vero Beach his home.

His childhood was spent in Akron, and he attended Akron University. In 1941, he joined the Navy as a mechanic and later was chosen for the Navy Choir. After his service, he returned to Ohio.

All through his life, he had a love for automobiles. As a career, it was not surprising that he chose the automotive field. He became the youngest Chrysler dealer in the country in 1950. He joined the Youngstown Buick Agency, set many sales records, and was soon promoted to vice president. Later, he struck out on his own to establish Omega Motors and Buzz Replogle Buick in New Castle, Pa.

At age 57, he suffered a severe heart attack and retired to Florida. Inheriting a natural ear and timing, he turned to his love for music. He took up the harmonica and became very proficient. He gave many musical programs for various clubs and senior citizens groups both playing instruments and singing.

He was a member of Youngstown Kiwanis for 30 years, and a member both the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Youngstown and the First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach.

On Saturday, Oct. 3, Buzz passed on leaving his loving wife of 66 years, Betty Replogle, a former teacher in the Boardman Ohio School System.

His children includes his son, Charles of Poland and daughter, Rhonda Ross of Atlanta. He also had four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Buzz was 88 years old.

In his later years, his enjoyment of the outdoors was expressed in his nurturing of flowers and trees. His friends will remember his ready smile and zest for life.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Stephen “Stevie” Smith, 55

LAKE MILTON – Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Stephen “Stevie” Smith, 55, who died Saturday at the Cleveland Clinic.

Stevie was born Sept. 24, 1954 in West Virginia, the son of William and Grace Smith.

Stevie graduated from Jackson-Milton High School in 1973, after graduation from 1974 to 1992.

He was a resident of the Florida Keys, where he was employed by Walt Disney Corporation for a brief time.

He was currently employed as a Scrap Metal Specialist. He was a member of the Fat Man Club, Little People of America, the Riverview Bocci League and was a volunteer for the Ohio State Park in Lake Milton.

Stevie is survived by his brothers, Donny and Joe; and sister, Debbie; and various nieces and nephews, all of Clarksburg, W.Va. He was also a proud godfather to Bill Corbett, and a loyal and loving friend to many.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Virgil.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home prior to services.

William Edward Snider, 64

NILES – William Edward Snider, 64, of North Pleasant Avenue, died at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at St. Joseph Health Center following an extended illness.

He was born in Bellaire on May 16, 1945 to Norman Otis and Virginia May (Timberlake) Snider and came to this area many years ago.

He retired in 1999 as an assembler for the General Motors Company Lordstown Plant, where he was employed for 30 years. Bill was previously employed at the former National Gypsum Company in Niles.

He was a member of St. Stephen’s Church, a Vietnam veteran, a member of the Knights of Columbus No. 1681 4th Degree and past Grand Knight, the United Auto Workers No. 1112 since 1969, was an avid woodworker, a gourmet cook and a certified locksmith. He especially enjoyed activities with his grandchildren and the family doggies, Abby Road and Urpie David.

He is survived by his wife, the former Nancy Fischer, whom he married May 18, 1968; two sons and two daughters, Edward William (Heather) Snider of Niles, Stacy Snider of Niles, Lisa K. (Heinz) Scheidegger of Warren and Charles Norman Snider at home; four grandsons and one granddaughter, Zachary Bishop Scheidegger, William Richard Scheidegger and Jacob Dylan Scheidegger, all of Warren and Addison Michael Crain and Halle Jean Snider, both of Niles; two sisters, Norma (Ronald) Danadic of Lordstown and Judy Hepler of Niles; sister-in-law, Charlagene (James) Delk of Hawthorne, Fla.; three brothers-in-law, Michael (Beverly) Fischer, David (Beth) Fischer and Lawrence Fischer, all of Evansville, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at Saint Stephen’s Church at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, with the Rev. Thomas Kraszewski officiating.

Burial will be at Niles City Cemetery with military honors provided by the Trumbull County Honor Guard.

Susan B. Susko, 90

CANFIELD – Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Lord Of Life Lutheran Church for Susan B. Susko, 90, who passed away Monday afternoon.

She was born Aug. 27,1919, the daughter of the late George and Susan (Poskrob) Babinchak.

Susan was a homemaker.

She was an active member at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Canfield and a worthy matron of the Eastern Star of Trias Chapter. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling with her husband, Mike. She was a former vice president of Poling Bacon Construction Co. in Poland. Susan was also involved with many charities and other organizations in the community.

Susan is survived by her sister, Anne Machel of Youngstown; five nephews, George (Joan) Babinchak of Struthers, John A. (Elaine) Babinchak of North Carolina, Robert (Jan) Machel of New Springfield, Edward J. (Sarah) Babinchak of Florida and William (Karen) Babinchak of Carbondale, Pa.; and two nieces, Carol A. Price of Youngstown and Mary E. (Doug) Nolfi of Williamsburg, Va.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Susko, whom she married May 8, 1943, and he passed away June 16,1993; one son, David Susko; and two brothers, George and John Babinchak.

Friends may call Wednesday at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. and Thursday at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church from 10:30 to 11 a.m., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. with Pastor Lang Collins.

Johanna C. (Herbst) Veltre, 78

GIRARD – A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Rose Church for Johanna C. (Herbst) Veltre, 78, who died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at Liberty Health Care Center.

She was born Oct. 19, 1930, in Coraopolis, Pa., the daughter of the late Aloysius Henry “Pete” Herbst and Cecilia Rose (Ropos) Herbst.

She retired from Northside Hospital in 2000 after 35 years working in the Food and Nutrition Services Department. She also had a part-time seamstress business. She was a member of St Rose Church in Girard, a driving instructor for AARP, and a past president of the Retired Local SEIU.

She married Joseph C. Veltre Sr. on Sept. 14, 1963, and he passed away Oct. 16, 1981.

She is survived by her son, Michael John Veltre of Dallas; and two brothers, David (Nancy) Herbst of San Francisco and Adam (Susan) Herbst of Iowa.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Herbst.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Liberty Health Care.

Arrangements were handled by the McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard.
