Ruth M. (Rice) Caparso, 87

CALIMESA, CALIF. – Ruth M. (Rice) Caparso, 87, of Calimesa, Calif., died peacefully at 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 22, 2009 in a nursing facility following an extended illness.

Born Dec. 19, 1922 in Coshocton, she was a resident of Yucaipa/Calimesa, Calif.

She is survived by her loving husband, Carl Caparso of 59 years, originally of Struthers, Ohio; sons Lee and Luckie Kent; and three grandchildren, Holly, Damon and Heather, all of Coshocton, Ohio; sister Margaret Walker of Oregon; and stepsister Jean Ellinton of Alabama.

She enjoyed traveling worldwide with her husband to 47 countries.

Interment will be private at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif.

Dolores Marie (Ferko) Cronenwett, 81

POLAND – Private services were held yesterday for Dolores Marie (Ferko) Cronenwett, 81, who passed away Wednesday morning at Hospice House.

Dolores was born on Sept. 18, 1928, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Alexander and Mary Ferko.

She graduated from Salem High School in 1946, and was a teacher at Springfield Local School for many years, and retired in 1982.

Dolores married Charles John Cronenwett Sr. on June 26, 1954.

Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Charles Cronenwett Jr. of Boardman and Ronald Cronenwett of Columbia, Md.; one daughter, Michele (Don) Devlin of New Springfield; two grandchildren, Anthony Devlin of New Springfield and Andrew (Nichole) Darr of El Paso, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Blake Darr, both of El Paso.

Dolores was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Ed Ferko.

Burial was at Green Haven Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by the Clemente Funeral Home in New Middletown.

Harold L. Donahue, 81

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP – Harold L. Donahue, 81, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, at Liberty Health Care.

Harold was born Feb. 27, 1928 to the late Andrew J. and Lona E. Jones Donahue in Lost Creek, W.Va.

He worked for U.S. Steel for two years then for 27 years as an electrician for Valley Mold & Iron, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of the Liberty Assembly of God Church in Girard, a lifetime member of the Youngstown V.F.W. and a former member of the Moose Lodge in Niles.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Nancy S. Small, whom he married Dec. 18, 1957; his daughter, Dawna D. (James) Gettings of Vienna; and his son, Harold “Rink” L. (Tina) Donahue II; sister, Clella “Kay” Diceglie of Warren; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Ora Kurtis, Hazel Hardman, Myrtle Small, Lola Johnston and Jean Sandy; and brothers, William S., Gerald, Roscoe and Andrew.

Private services were held at Blackstone Funeral Home.

Deacon Henry L. Eiland, 86

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. at Phillips Chapel Church of God In Christ for Deacon Henry L. Eiland, 86, who entered eternal life on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Mr. Eiland was born March 15, 1923 in Wiona, Miss., a son of Lynn Eiland and Willie Mae Love.

He had been employed with Republic Hose, retiring in the late 1980’s. He was also employed with McIntee Motors, and was a child care provider for Mahoning County Job and Family Services. He was a member of Prayer Tower C.O.G.I.C., its Deacon Board, Sunday School Superintendent, and the Board of Directors. He was an Army veteran.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, the former Lucy O’Bryant, whom he married July 4, 1948; his children, Henrietta Eiland (Vincent) Cameron of Poland, James E. (Loretta), Clement L. (Judy), Ricky (Patricia), Johnny R. and Joy Eiland Frazier, all of Youngstown, the Rev. Roger (Ruth) and Yolanda Eiland, both of Grand Prairie, Texas and Laletha Eiland of Arlington, Texas; three sisters, Lula M. Ratcliff, Florence Lee and Mary Dorris. all of Kilmichael, Miss.; a brother, James Eiland of St. Louis; 23 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Besides his parents, Lynn Eiland and Willie Mae Campbell, he was preceded in death by a son, the Rev. Timothy Eiland; and two brothers, s and Joe Arnold Eiland.

Eugenia Richardson Gayles, 85

POMONA, CALIF. – Services will be today, Oct. 9, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Gethsemane Baptist Church in Youngstown for Eugenia Richardson Gayles, 85, who passed away Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, at Chino Valley Medical Center.

Mrs. Gayles, lovingly known as “Honey” was born May 9, 1924 in Marion, Ala., a daughter of Henry and Millie Edmonds Richardson.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Greater New Faith Ministries in Pomona and served on its Mother’s Board, a former member of the Gethsemane Baptist Church in Youngstown, where she served as church mother and was active on the usher board and mission ministry.

She enjoyed traveling, cooking, music, especially the blues. Eugenia loved going to the WWF with her grandchildren.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters, Margaret Pitchford of Chicago, Velma Campbell, Eugenia Harris and Agnes Gayles, all of Youngstown, Francine (Harold) Smith, Rachel Burr and Vivian Mitchell, all of Pomona; sons, Lively Wilson Gayles Jr. and Jeffrey (Edwina R.), both of Pomona; 30 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lively W. Gayles Sr., whom she married Feb. 8, 1942; her parents; three daughters, Margaree Green, Theresa Gayles and Lattie Gayles; two sisters, Mary London and Beatrice Mills; and brothers, Luke Hartley, Woodrow Hartley, Preston Hartley, Lynn Hartley and Goliath Hartley.

Lila Gray, 90

YOUNGSTOWN – Mrs. Lila Gray went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 3, 2009, at the Hospice House.

Mrs. Gray was in housekeeping and a member of St. Andrews A.M.E. Church, a member of the Williams Health Missionary Society, Funeral Dinners Committee, Usher Board, Willing Workers and Stewardess No. 2 class leader.

Mrs. Gray leaves a son, Thomas Tisdale of Youngstown; a stepson, Robert Wade of Youngstown; a brother, James and Ruth McCrae of Atlanta; three grandsons, James Tisdale of Atlanta and Shane Tisdale and Christopher Carter of Youngstown; two granddaughters, Nicole Tisdale of Youngstown and Jamier Edmuson of Columbus; and two nieces, Cassandra Andrews of Atlanta and JoAnn Miller of Youngstown; and a special friend and caregiver, Ms. Mary Kitchen of Youngstown.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gabel Gray; a brother, George McCrae, two sisters, Daisy Shaw and Lula Bell Johnson; and her parents, Joe and Annie McCrae.

Service will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Andrews A.M.E. Church.

Calling hours will be held today at 10 a.m. at the church.

Helen E. Green, 81

HUBBARD – There will be services at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home for Helen E. Green, 81, who passed away Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Select Specialty Hospital in Boardman.

Helen was born Sept. 26, 1928, in Youngstown, a daughter of William Thomas and Mildred May Lynch Sullivan.

She worked at American Paper Products and was a Union Representative.

She leaves her children, Robert and spouse, Bernadette Green of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., William Desmond Green of Youngstown and Cheryl Lynne and her late husband, Rick Johnstone of Youngstown; six grandchildren, Robin, Michael, Robert Jr., Richard Jr., James and William Jr.; and eight great-grandchildren.

She also leaves a brother, John Thomas and spouse, Carol Sullivan of Louisville, Ky.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, Desmond Green; infant brother, Eugene Sullivan; and a sister, Winifred Lysowski.

There will be calling hours Saturday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.

Mary George Kerola, 104

HUBBARD – Mary George Kerola, 104, died peacefully in her sleep at home early Wednesday morning, Oct. 7, on the feast of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Mrs. Kerola was born on Dec. 25, 1904, the last of five children of Shanini and Thomas George Wahabe in Feghal, Jbeil, Lebanon. Because she was born on Christmas, her mother used to say her name came with her, so she named her Mary.

She emigrated to the United States in 1907. Her mother made several transatlantic trips between the United States and Lebanon, and in 1912 was a survivor of the Titanic. Mrs. Kerola was interviewed many times over the years for her recollections of the stories her mother told her.

As a young girl, she packed ice-cream cones for the family business, George & Thomas Cone Company, which is now Joy Cone Co. in Hermitage, Pa. In Sharon, Pa., she worked at an original Isaly’s Dairy store on State Street. While her children were in college, she co-owned a grocery store in Youngstown. In the 1950s, she and her husband fulfilled their lifelong dream when they founded P I & I Motor Express in Masury.

She married Joseph J. Kerola in Sharon on Feb. 24, 1927. They lived in Buffalo, N.Y., Sharon and Youngstown. They moved to Hubbard in 1953. He passed away on Nov. 13, 1965.

Their only son, John J. Kerola, died on June 19, 1996. Besides her parents, her husband, and their son, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas, Joseph and Albert; and a sister, Rose George Thomas.

Mrs. Kerola leaves her daughter, Joann Kerola Knuth, with whom she made her home and grandchildren Richard L. Knuth Jr. and his wife, Lynn of Charlotte, N.C. and Mary Jo Knuth of Liberty Township. She also leaves grandsons, Joseph J. Kerola and his wife, Pamela of Hubbard and William J. Kerola and his wife, Carrie of Greenville, Pa. and seven great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and numerous other relatives and friends.

As she aged, she maintained many close relationships. Throughout the years, she was especially close to her nephew, Peter Feghali of Ramona, Calif. and Dr. and Mrs. Fred W. Dunlea of Youngstown. She was grateful that she had such a supportive and loving extended family.

Friends and family may pay their respects on Monday, Oct. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church. A rosary will be said at 3:45 p.m. and the funeral Mass will follow at 4 p.m.

The family requests that any material tributes be made to Millcreek Children’s Center, c/o Sister Jerome Corcoran OSU, 44 Essex St., Youngstown, OH 44502 or Queen of the Holy Rosary Education Fund, 291 Scoville Road, Vienna, OH 44473.

Richard W. Leach, 70

AUSTINTOWN – Services will be Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Richard W. Leach, 70, who died Wednesday evening at Hospice House.

Richard was born Dec. 25, 1938 in Youngstown, the son of Robert Emit and Myrna Waller Leach.

He had worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital in its E.R. and cast room for over 17 years and later at Orthopedic Associates as a cast room technician for 23 years, before retiring in 1999.

He was a charter member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and especially enjoyed riding his motorcycle.

He is survived by his wife, the former Marie B. Danko, whom he married Jan. 3, 1959; a daughter, Barbara (David) Fercana of Youngstown; two sisters, Myrna (Donald) Strange of Austintown and Margaret (Paul) Holovitch of Boardman; and a granddaughter, Jessica Fercana.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, David and Robert Leach.

Jane J. Nickoloff, 86

 AUSTINTOWN – Prayers will begin at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial concelebrated by Father Gregory Fedor and Father Edward Noga at St. Joseph Church for Jane J. Nickoloff, 86, who passed away Wednesday evening at the Hospice House.

Mrs. Nickoloff was born July 17, 1923, in Youngstown, a daughter of John and Josephine Andres Urban and was a lifelong area resident. 

She was a 1940 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School. Jane had been the co-founder of the Health Food Center in downtown Youngstown with her husband in 1947.

Jane was a charter member of St. Joseph Church and former member of Saint Christine Church in Youngstown and Saint Joseph the Provider Church in Campbell. She was a member of the Greenbrier Garden Club, former member of the Youngstown Chamber of Commerce, the Better Business Bureau and National Natural Food Association. Mrs. Nickoloff was a supporter of the Youngstown Symphony and the Ballet Western Reserve. Jane also served on the Board of the Garden Forum of Greater Youngstown.

Her husband, Cyril Nickoloff, whom she married Sept. 20, 1945, died April 1, 2000.

She leaves three daughters, J. Joyce (Ron) Talkowski of Columbus, Judith A. (Michael) Mihok of Moon Township, Pa. and Nancy E. (Edward) Fox of Canfield; and seven grandchildren, Christopher (Jennifer) Talkowski, Stephanie (Andrew) Karas, Morgan Mihok, Zachary Mihok, Nicole Fox, Natalie Fox and Noelle Fox.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lottie Maron and Stephanie Sooy; and a brother, Joseph Urban.

Jane’s family wishes to thank her caregivers, Margie, Cathy, Jane, Sophie and especially Joann Fani for the love and care they gave to their mother and their grandmother.

Richard “Butch” Sterling Priscaro, 54

NEW MIDDLETOWN – Richard “Butch” Sterling Priscaro, 54, died Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, after a brief illness.

Mr. Priscaro was born Feb. 1, 1955 in Bessemer, Pa., son of Eugene and LaRue (Grimes) Kuhar.

He was a graduate of Springfield Local High School, where he played football and ran track and the New Castle School of Trades, with a degree in Auto-Diesel Tech. Butch worked as a mechanic for several years and he also did faux finishing and painted houses.

He had 22 years of sobriety by the grace of God. Butch was also a very active member of the Girl Scouts of America. Butch loved gardening, woodworking, watching SCI-FI shows, and most of all a huge Green Bay Packer fan.

Butch was the kind of guy that would absolutely do anything for anybody. He was a man of integrity, respect and honor.

Butch was a soft tissue and cornea donor. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Butch leaves his wife, the former Deborah Kasten; one daughter, Khalea Priscaro of Struthers; one sister, Betty (Donald) Kushner of Poland; three nephews, Vincent (Annette) Kushner, Michael (Mary) Kushner and Randall (Nicole) Kushner, all of Poland; two great-nieces, Kara Kushner and Ashlynn Kushner; three great-nephews, Kevin Kushner, Michael Kushner and Tommy Kushner; two uncles, James (Dolly) Kuhar and Harvey Grimes of Bessemer; and four hand picked “adopted” daughters, Patrice Henderson of Campbell, Katilynn Kinsley of Austintown, Mindi Corn of Washingtonville and Roshell Rankin of Struthers.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by several aunts, uncles and many loved ones.

Family and friends will be received Sunday from 5 to 6:45 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, where funeral services will be held Sunday at 7 pm.

Edwin Harrold Rohrer, 83

COLUMBIANA – Memorial services will be held at noon on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at the Mt. Olivet United Church of Christ in North Lima for Edwin Harrold Rohrer, 83, who passed away on Friday evening, Oct. 2, 2009.

Marie T. Sanders, 79

AUSTINTOWN – Prayers will begin Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for Marie T. Sanders, 79, who died Wednesday afternoon at Austinwoods Care Center.

Marie was born Feb. 7, 1930 in Youngstown, the daughter of Joseph and Minnie Chance Strauch.

She had worked in the clerical department of the U.S. Steel Corporation and was a charter member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and its senior citizens and Altar and Rosary Society.

Her husband, Ralph Sanders, whom she married Oct. 21, 1950, and who died Dec. 4, 2004.

She is survived by a daughter, Anita Sanders of Connecticut; a son, David Sanders of Austintown; a sister, Laura Dunlap of McDonald; and a brother, Richard (Jean) Strauch of North Jackson.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.

The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society in Marie’s memory.
