Henry L. “Chook” Demeny, 76

POLAND – Henry L.”Chook” Demeny, 76, of College Street, died Oct. 30, 2009 at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Mr. Demeny was born Nov. 10, 1932 in Poland, a son of Frank and Julia Moner Demeny, and was a life area resident. Many knew him as “Chook”, a childhood nickname, derived from calling chickens while working on the family farm.

Mr. Demeny worked as a truck driver for over 30 years, independently with M & M Trucking out of Bessemer, Pa., then at Mitchell Trucking and T.C. Trucking.

He was a member of the Bessemer Croatian Club, the Teamsters Local 261 and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Germany during the Korean Conflict. With his passion in cars and racing, he built cars with his nephew, Frank “Buzzy” Day.

He is survived by one daughter, Jill Lynn Demeny of New Orleans; and one son, Dave Henry (Lin Shi) Demeny of Centreville, Va.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Martha Day, Helen Bailey, Wilma Loftus, Dolly Nagel and Annabelle Demeny; and one brother, Arthur “Muzzy” Demeny.

Graveside services will be held Friday at noon at the Poland Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Chook’s name to the Youngstown VFW, 4150 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, OH 44515.

Betsey Ann Dodgson, 73

BOARDMAN – Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman for Betsey Ann Dodgson, 73, who passed away Oct. 21, 2009, at her home.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the church.

George Draia Sr., 90

CLEVELAND, TENN. – On Oct. 27, 2009, George Draia Sr., 90, passed away and sleeps until Jesus awakens him at the second coming. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17.

Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Szabo & Sons Funeral Home in Youngstown for George.

He was born on Oct. 8, 1919 in Youngstown, a son of Vasile and Katherine Sharkovich Draia.

George was a police officer, carpenter and warehouse manager. He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theatre, where he received a Purple Heart. He was a VFW member.

George moved to Florida in 1981, and then to Tennessee in 2002. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

George was married to his first wife, the former Mary Biro in 1940, and she passed away in 1962. His second wife, the former Mary Kalosky, whom he married in 1967, and passed away in 2005.

He leaves a son, George (Carole) Draia Jr. of Mohrsville, Pa.; a daughter, Diana (James) Aumack of Collegedale, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Friends may call Friday at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m.

Interment will be at Belmont Park Cemetery.


Leon Charles Edwards III, 34

COLUMBUS – A funeral service will be Friday at noon at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home in Youngstown for Mr. Leon Charles Edwards III, 34, who departed this life Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Edwards, affectionately known as “Chucky,” was born July 8, 1975 in Tyler, Texas, a son of the late Leon Edwards Jr. and Phyllis Brown Ratliff. Leon was raised in Youngstown.

Growing up, he loved to play football. He attended The Rayen School.

He also worked for Rolling Acres as a custodian.

He had a passion for dogs and loved listening to music and watching movies.

Leon was a devoted father to his sons. He accepted the Lord as his personal savior before God called him home.

He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Phyllis Ratliff of Columbus; three sons, Trevaughn Thomas, Leon Edwards and Davon Edwards, all of Youngstown; a brother, Nigel Ratliff (Keisha) of Columbus; a sister, Sevella Jones (Antwan) of Campbell; his grandmother, Norma Brown of Youngstown; two aunts, Norine Foster of Columbus and Summer Ratliff of Youngstown; an uncle, Odell Ratliff of Phoenix; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

His father; grandfathers, Walter Brown Jr. and Leon C. Edwards Jr.; and a cousin, Marcelle Brown, preceded him in death.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Maxine Gerner, 62


WARREN – Maxine Gerner, 62, passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 1, 2009, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 1, 1946 in Orangeville, the daughter of Ellis C. and Thelma Forsha Oakes.

She retired in 1999 from Delphi-Packard as an assembler after working 30 years. She enjoyed camping.

She is survived by a daughter, Lori (Christopher) Matusky of Newton Falls; a son, James (Betty) Garvey of Warren; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Adeline Nelson of Champion, Eva McCurdy of Greenville, Pa., Sara (Jerome) Sunderland of Hartford and her twin sister, Eileen (William) Groover of Warren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, James Oakes; a sister, Betty Carlson and fiancé, William Bumgardner.

At this time there will be no services.

Emile Hawkins, 97

YOUNGSTOWN – Mr. Emile Hawkins, 97, passed away on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Mr. Hawkins was born Oct. 24, 1912, in Vicksburg, Miss., a son of Richard and Florence Hawkins.

He was a laborer at Republic Steel for 34 years and a member of the Assemble In Truth Church of Campbell.

Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife, Melvinia of Akron; two sons, Melvin (Eartha) Sanders of Youngstown and Elijah Sanders of Detroit; two daughters, Mary Sanders of Akron and Carolyn Jones of Youngstown; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Services will be at noon on Friday at the Howard-Rhoden Memorial Home.

Alice Carol Humphrey, 61

MINERAL RIDGE – Alice Carol Humphrey, 61, of 1392 Salt Springs Road, passed away at 4:04 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at her residence of an extended illness.

She was born in Ypsilanti, Mich. on Sept. 27, 1948 to Leonard and Elizabeth Pauline (Cline) Humphrey and moved to this community in 1952.

A 1966 graduate of Mineral Ridge High School, she retired in 1998 after working 30 years at Packard Electric Company and was a member of the Apostolic Pentecostal Church. An avid shopper, she enjoyed traveling and making crafts.

She is survived by her mother, E. Pauline Humphrey, with whom she lived; four sisters, Susan (Douglas) Brown of Niles, Deborah (John) Burleson of Niles, Linda (Ronald) Oliver of Mineral Ridge and Theresa Sammartino of Youngstown; brother, L. Duane (Susan) Humphrey of Jamestown, Pa.; 17 nieces and nephews, Rebekah Wall, Michael Lusby, David Osborn, Shannon Brown, Rachel Bell, Helen Osborn, Catharine Osborn, Eric Humphrey, David Lusby, Steven Osborn, Christopher Sammartino, Jesse Sammartino, Megan Feldhouse, Jennifer Feldhouse, Christopher Oliver, Michelle Oliver and Amanda Kripcak; and 15 great-nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home.

The funeral will be Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Apostolic Pentecostal Church, DeForest Road, where family and friends may also call one hour prior to the service. Pastor Douglas Brown will officiate.

Burial will be at Kerr Cemetery.

Sam Marr, 88

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Sam Marr died on Oct. 30, 2009, at the age of 88 in Asheville.

He is survived by his wife, Yolanda of 67 years, whom he married in Italy; his daughters, Flora of Asheville and Cynthia of Pittsburgh; a brother, Jimmy of Poland; a sister, Antonette of Struthers; and many nieces and nephews, of his many brothers and sisters who went before him.


Patrick J. “Sarge” McDowell Jr., 57

HUBBARD – Patrick J. “Sarge” McDowell Jr., 57, died Monday morning, Nov. 2, 2009, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 12, 1952, in New Castle, Pa., a son of Patrick J. and Geraldine Via McDowell Sr., and had lived in Hubbard since 1977.

Mr. McDowell was a guard for TCI Prison, retiring in 2008, and also served with the U.S. Air Force Reserves, retiring after 20 years of service in 1991.

Sarge was a member of St. Patrick Church, the Kiwanis Club of Hubbard, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hubbard Post No. 3767 and the Amvets of Vienna. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, fishing, camping and model cars.

He leaves his wife, the former Debra L. Groboski, whom he married Oct. 8, 1977; a son, Patrick J. (his fiancé, Lindsey Zagorski) McDowell III of Hubbard; two daughters, Tracy L. (her fiancé, Robert Ruby) McDowell and Lisa M. McDowell, both of Hubbard; and two grandchildren, Patrick J. McDowell IV and Briley Ruby.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Church.

Millard E. Meyers, 87


“Together Again”

GIRARD – Private funeral services will be held for Millard E. Meyers, 87, who died Sunday evening at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

He was born May 6, 1922 in Connellsville, Pa., a son of Roy and Minnie (Eiford) Meyers.

He worked on the assembly line for Oldberg Manufacturing, formerly McKenzie Muffler, in Austintown for 18 years and he owned and operated the S&E Auto Salvage in Lowellville for 15 years before retiring. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Air Corps during World War II.

Millard was a simple man and he enjoyed working on cars and being outdoors.

He is survived by two children, Ronald (Anna) Meyers of Canfield and Sharon (Louis) Gilbert of Youngstown. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Linda Kennedy of Youngstown, Louis (Angie) Fekety of Youngstown, Shane (Kimberly) Fekety of Newton Falls, and Shawn Fekety of Youngstown; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Herschel (Mary) Meyers of Normalville, Pa., Dellman “Gene” Meyers of Crossville, Tenn., and John (Carol) Meyers of North Jackson; and a sister, Mildred “Pearl” Borst of Whitehall, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ellwood and Virgil “Elbridge” Meyers; two sisters, Helen Gessner and Martha Elaine Meyers, who died as an infant; and his longtime companion, Dolly Ritenour.

Private calling hours will be held for the family.

Edith “Edie” V. Moore, 75

BELLEVUE, NEB. – Edith “Edie” V. Moore, 75, formerly of Wakefield Avenue, died Sunday morning at the Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Neb.

Edie was born March 3, 1934 in Vienna, a daughter of John and Mary Lewis Billock. She was raised in New Springfield, before moving to Struthers.

Edie was a 1952 graduate of Struthers High School, and a graduate of LaSalle University.

She worked at the Colonial House, The Mansion and the Pink Elephant before going to General Motors, where she retired in 1996 after 25 years.

Edie was a member of Local No. 1112 U.A.W., Renewal Team No. 13, and the Cursillo Team No. 36. She was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, and a former member of St. Joseph Church in Austintown.

She enjoyed sewing and creating different things such as stoma covers and donating them to the Youngstown Hearing and Speech Center in Boardman. She also made 50 fleece blankets and donated them to the Rescue Mission in Youngstown, along with several hundred hours of helping in the kitchen.

She leaves one son, Arthur “Jake” (Lynda) Moore of Bellevue; three daughters, Marie (Philip) Kubico of Cambridge, Cindy (Greg) Hynes of Lowellville and Deborah Marsh of Struthers; one sister, Mary Lyda of Petersburg; two brothers, Philip Billock of Nome, Alaska and Charles Billock of Poland; 15 grandchildren, Christy (Giap) Neisius, Kelly Pickering, Molly (Andy) Denham, Joseph (Nicole) Moore, Joe (Amanda), Michelle (fiance Sean) Guidos, Jamie, Kelly and Emmett Hynes, Philip Riffle, Victoria Williams, Kenneth Riffle, Ryen Klouse, Scott Hale and Sara (Eric) Smith; and 20 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Edie was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Baker, Cecilia Ernst and Rosalie Craig; and eight brothers, Francis, Felix, Raymond, John Jr., Lloyd “Bud,” Nicholas, Fred and Richard Billock.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10:15 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers, and at 11 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, with Fr. John Trimbur officiating. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.

Family and friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Struthers, where the Cursillo Bible Vigil will be held at 7 p.m.

Nadine Price, 51

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP – Nadine Price, who passed away Nov. 2, 2009 at the age of 51 after a lengthy illness.

She was born and raised in Lakewood. She has resided in Boardman, Akron, and finally Springfield Twp.

She graduated from Stark State College as a Physical Therapy Assistant. She was a member of the PRN Therapy Services Family for 11 years.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Cuyahoga Falls. She served as a deacon and on the Christian Education Committee.

Nadine enjoyed watching NASCAR (go Jeff Gordon), completing jigsaw and Sudoku puzzles, crocheting, baking, and “Girls Night Out” with her friends from work.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rose Ann Dietrich; in-laws, Howard and Evelyn Price; and sister-in-law, Barbara Kerr.

Nadine is survived by her loving husband, Dan, who will miss her very much. She is also survived by daughters, Jennifer and Natasha; son-in-law, Jay; granddaughters, Jessica and Nicole; sister, Kimberley (Karen); brothers-in-law, Dave (Carrie) of Austintown, Dennis (Evelyn) of California, Dick (Caryl) of Poland, Tom (Louise) of Montana and Pete Kerr of Lexington; sisters-in-law, Judy (Dale) of Boardman and Annie (Butch) of Poland; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and “The Girls.”

Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, prior to a memorial service at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Gail Lindsey officiating at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Road in Akron.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Natasha’s College Education Fund or to First Christian Church in Cuyahoga Falls.

She has touched many lives and will be deeply missed!

Betty Jane Hunsinger Ruane, 92

POLAND – Betty Jane Ruane, 92, passed away Oct. 31, 2009.

She was born on the east side of Youngstown on Sept. 9, 1917 to Freas and Rebecca Hunsinger.

Betty’s family moved to the Wickcliff area and she graduated from Fitch High School in 1935. She worked at the Ravenna Arsenal during World War II and met Thomas L. Ruane, to whom she was married on Sept. 22, 1943. They lived together on the west side of Youngstown until Tom’s death in 1989.

She worked at Conroy’s Market for many years and was a member of the Austintown Community Church.

She leaves her son, Thomas F. (Tim) Ruane and his wife, Donna; her nieces, Joyce Pogony and Virginia Shanabarger; and nephews, Miles, Donald and Fred Hunsinger, along with many great and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Her two brothers, Kenneth Z. and Ronald J. Hunsinger, preceded her in death.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Ginny and Paul Shanabarger for their devoted assistance to Betty and a sincere thanks also to all those at Sunrise Assisted Living who attended to her care and comfort.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Youngstown.

Friends and family may call at the church beginning at 10 a.m.

Marcella Stellato, 89

HUBBARD – Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Chapel at Calvary Cemetery for Marcella Stellato, 89, who died Wednesday afternoon at Hospice House.

Marcella was born Jan. 13, 1920 in Ohio City to the late Winfred and Molly (Mottiger) Rickard.

She worked at Goodwill Industries as a textile worker for over 20 years. Marcella attended the Columbus School for the Deaf. She loved to dance and play cards, she lived life to the fullest.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nick Stellato; daughter, Deborah Clark; former husband, William Harris; sisters, Violya Fleming, Cleo Karofe and Mabel Yurton; and a brother, Doyt Rickard.

Marcella leaves a daughter, Judy Bish of Struthers; eight grandchildren, Tina Skruck of Hubbard, Lisa Chaibi of Hubbard, Alan L. Clark Jr. of Hubbard, Michelle Guitierrez of Ft. Morgan, Colo., Marsha Truex of Struthers, Erica Bish of Struthers, Bill Bish of Struthers and Gary Bish Jr. of Struthers; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She also leaves a sister, Leah Wendel of Indiana and a brother, Robert Rickard of Van Wirt.

Bernice Whiting, 80

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home for Ms. Bernice Whiting, 80, who entered eternal life Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit.

Ms. Whiting was born April 16, 1929, in Fairmont, W.Va., a daughter of John A. and Gertrude Denmark Whiting.

She worked as a dietary aide for Forum Health Northside Medical Center. She attended the Greater Friendship Baptist Church and the Price Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church. She enjoyed being with her family and traveling.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory, three nieces, Delores Givans and Carol Herndon, both of Detroit and Patricia Whiting of West Virginia; three nephews, Michael and Robert Whiting, both of North Carolina and Don Whiting of West Virginia; a great-niece; four great-nephews; and a host of family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Alliene Mealy, Mary Russell and Betty Whiting; a brother, John Whiting; a nephew, Walter Russell; and two nieces, Rita Russell and Harriet Whiting.
