Mildred Y. Barone, 91

“Together Again”

STRUTHERS – Mildred Y. Barone, 91, died Tuesday afternoon at the Masternick Memorial Health Care Center in New Middletown.

Mrs. Barone, affectionately known as Grandma Millie, was born Jan. 29, 1918 in Canton, a daughter of Dominic and Josephine Palumbo Martia. She was raised in Canton and moved to this area in 1937.

Grandma Millie was a wonderful homemaker, taking care of her husband of 58 years, her 11 children, and caring for her grand babies as often and whenever she could. She actively participated in PTA and St. Nicholas Boosters, while proudly maintaining her beloved home on Sylvan Avenue, and at the same time baking homemade bread, making cheese from cow’s milk, sewing, and hosting her famous Sunday spaghetti dinners.

She was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers, where she belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society, Infant Jesus of Prague, and baked for the church sales.

Her husband, Vincent J. Barone, whom she married June 5, 1937, died Aug. 30, 1995.

She leaves six daughters, Rosemary (Steve) Klim, Jo Ann (Robert) Stoops, Patti (Gene) Pompeii, Janet (Mike) Annichine and Debbie (Frank) Vaio, all of Struthers, and Laina “Millie” (John) Sturm of Lowellville; five sons, Ralph “Skip” (Gladys) Barone of Lowellville, James (Susan) Barone of Lowellville, Joseph (Margaret) Barone of Boynton Beach, Fla., David (Marlene) Barone of Struthers and Michael “Stymie” Barone of Struthers; one sister, Rose Altieri of Canton; 34 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Paul Martia; and three sisters, Helen Pascarella, Madeline Long and Mary Dastalfo.

Services will be held Saturday at 10:15 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and at 11 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers.

Interment will be held at a later date at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.

Friends will be received Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Wayne N. Cornelius, 66

BOARDMAN – Wayne N. Cornelius, 66, died at his home on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, after a brief illness.

Born July 7, 1943, in New Castle, Pa., he was the son of the late John N. and Elizabeth Reno Cornelius.

He was married on June 4, 1965 to Jane Sherman Cornelius, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Wayne (Erika) Cornelius Jr. of Boardman and Dave (Dana) Cornelius of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren, Ashley and Nathan Cornelius of Boardman; sister, Joan (Bob) Lees of Hermitage, Pa.; father-in-law, Franklin (Frieda) Sherman of Poland; sister-in-law, Doris (Roger) Cousineau of Windham, Maine; nephew, Donn (Holly) Aiken of Albany, N.Y.; niece, Allison (Eric) Waldschmidt of Pittsburgh; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Wayne graduated from Youngstown State University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and began his career at Xerox as an account manager. He later worked as a National Sales Manager for Casings Inc., in West Middlesex, Pa., before founding Ohio Roll-Fab Inc., in Youngstown. He then owned and operated the Downtown Draught House until his retirement in 2004.

He was a longtime member of the Boardman United Methodist Church and served on the Missions Committee. Wayne was a member of the Western Star Masonic Lodge as well as the Scottish Rite, Youngstown Consistory.

He was an avid Steelers fan and model railroader. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren and will be sorely missed.

Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28, at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home in Canfield, followed by services at 6 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Peg Welch.

Ann Dailey, 92

YOUNGSTOWN – Ann Dailey, 92, passed away Tuesday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Historic St. John Lutheran Church, with the very Rev. D. Gary Schreckengost officiating.

Ann was born Oct. 12, 1917 in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Michael and Susan (Hujdick) Susko.

She was a homemaker and a member of the church. She also belonged to the Butler Institute of Art, the Metropolitan Opera, A.A.R.P., the Animal Charity League and the Quilting Club, all in Youngstown.

Her husband, Thomas J. Dailey, whom she married July 10, 1947, passed away Sept. 17, 1976.

Ann will be sadly missed by many, including her brother, Andrew (Carolyn) Susko of Woodland Park, N.J. and Mary Susko of Youngstown.

Besides her parents and husband, she was was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Susko and her sister, Susan Susko.

Friends may call Friday morning at the Historic St. John Lutheran Church, 1429 Mahoning Ave., from 10 to 10:30 a.m.

Kathleen Jean Fabian, 81


CAMPBELL – Private family services were held Wednesday at the Wasko Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Yargo officiating for Kathleen Jean Fabian, 81, who passed away Friday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center after a long illness.

Jean was born March 1, 1928 in Franklin, Pa., the daughter of Raymond and Annie James Bond.

Jean’s family moved to Youngstown when she was a young child. She graduated from East High School with honors in 1946.

Jean retired in 1990 after 29 years as manager of the Insurance Department at Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital. In 1999, she retired permanently, after working part-time for eight years at Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital with Dr. Essad in Radiology.

She was a member of the Marion Heights United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Robert S. Fabian, whom she married on May 14, 1949, passed away on Dec. 12, 1990.

She leaves her son, Ray (Cleo) Fabian, with whom she made her home; a sister, Joan Wanco of Struthers; five granddaughters, Kathleen Fabian, Tari (Richie) Long, Kari Leah (Mike) Manyose, Amalia Kostantas and Andreanna (Sandro) Ducheschi of Switzerland; and six great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert S. Fabian Jr.; a sister, Elizabeth Sheppard; and two brothers, Ray and Jimmy Bond.

John M. Fabry, 89

STRUTHERS - Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. at the Kirila Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church for John M. Fabry, 89, who died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

He was born June 21, 1920 in Campbell, a son of the late George and Julia Jacubec Fabry.

John was a graduate of Struthers High School and worked as a boiler maker for Republic Steel Corp., retiring in 1978, after many years of service.

He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the European Theater during World War II.

He was an active member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church having served as president of the Men’s Club, was on Parish Council, a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild, the Muscle Club and was a pirohy worker.

He was a member of the Senior Citizens Club No. 2162 in Struthers and the VFW Post No.7538.

He enjoyed golfing, gardening and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by a son, James (Linda) Fabry of Simi Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Patricia (Anthony) Grieco of Austintown; a daughter-in-law, Teri Fabry of Plainwell, Mich.; and two sisters, Dorothy (Mike) Petro and Mary Ann Sedmak, both of Campbell; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. His grandson, William, lived with him and took very good care of him.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Elizabeth Fondoulis, whom he married Aug. 26, 1946, and who died March 7, 2007; a son, Thomas Fabry; two brothers, George and Joseph Fabry; and three sisters, Julia Susany, Elizabeth Popovich and a baby sister, Marie.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Nov. 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be at St. John Cemetery.

Mario Giansante, 89

YOUNGSTOWN – Mario Giansante, 89, passed away Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

He was born May 27, 1920 in Pescana, Italy, a son of the late Raffaele Giansante and the late Ida (Zaffri) Giansante.

He was the husband of the late Adelaide Di Giacomo Giansante.

Family includes a son, Anthony (Jean) Giansante of Youngstown; two daughters, Ida (Hamlette) and Booker Newberry III of Youngstown and Adele Giansante of Youngstown; a brother, Anthony Giansante; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Tolomeo Giansante.

He was a member of St. Patrick Church and a Corporal in the Italian Army. He volunteered at Omni Manor Nursing Home, and also enjoyed gardening and raising parakeets.

Calling hours will be at the Fabrizio Funeral Home, 619 E. Indianola Ave. in Youngstown on Friday, Nov. 27, from 9 to 11 a.m.

His services will be at St. Patrick at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 27.

Mary “Sally” Gilbert, 96

MINERAL RIDGE – There are no services for Mary “Sally” Gilbert, who passed away Tuesday at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Sally was born April 27, 1913 in Monessa, Pa., a daughter of the late Alexander and Mary Murdock.

She was a bookkeeper for Ryan’s Service in Youngstown for 18 years, and had worked at St. Paul’s Monastery on Route 224. She was also a practical nurse.

Sally was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church and enjoyed doing crafts, including crocheting and knitting afghans.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Sally was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Gilbert, whom she married June 19, 1961, and passed away on Dec. 12, 2007; two adopted sons, Howard and William; two sisters, Catherine and Ann; and two brothers, Michael “Mickey” and Johnny.

Anna Graban, 96

AKRON – Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. John Orthodox Church in Campbell for Anna Graban, 96, formerly of Hyatt Avenue in Campbell, who passed away Monday morning at Sunrise of Bath Assisted Living, with her loving family by her side.

Anna was born Nov. 1, 1913 in Campbell, the daughter of John and Anna Cejkovsky Livosky and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a homemaker, a member of the church, the Secret Sisters, Sisterhood, Altar Society and the O Club.

Her husband, George A. Graban, whom she married on Feb. 12, 1938, passed away on Oct. 2, 2004.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, William (Neva) Graban of Senecaville, Claudia (Ronald) Graban Moore of Mercer, Pa., Dennis (Jennifer) Graban of Evansville, Ind., Joanna (George) Farragher of Medina and June (James) Olee of Sharon Township; two sisters, Helen Livosky of Campbell and Pauline Truhan of Poland; one brother, William (Linda) Livosky of Campbell; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Sandra Whiteard; and brothers and sisters, John Livosky, Mary Kennedy, Sue Marinelli and Michael Livosky.

Ida A. Hayes, 73

NEW SPRINGFIELD – Services will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home in New Middletown for Ida A. Hayes, 73, of 11378 Beard Road, who passed away Tuesday afternoon at Hospice House.

Ida was born Jan. 17, 1936 in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Donald Hampton and Rose L. Gazzo DeLozier.

She graduated from Patterson Park High School in Baltimore.

She moved to this area in 1965. Before moving here, she worked as an operator at Bell Telephone and for Lever Brothers, both in Maryland. She managed the Leffingwell Hills Country Club Restaurant and Banquet Hall. She was also the owner of Sharkey’s Down Under Restaurant in Campbell.

Ida was also the owner and president of Hayes D & D Towing in New Springfield that she operated with her husband and family.

Ida was of the Methodist faith. She was also a member of the Columbiana Chapter 428 of the Ohio Order of the Eastern Star. She also enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ida married Dallas R. Hayes Sr. on Oct. 6, 1954.

Besides her husband, she leaves one son, Dallas R. (Darlene) Hayes Jr. of New Springfield; one daughter, Patricia A. Barnes of New Middletown; one brother, Donald Hampton DeLozier Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters, Colletta (Charles) Saunders of Laurel, Del., Patricia (Al) Szczepanski of Noblesville, Ind. and Geraldine (Charles) Backus of Valdosta, Ga.; also her grandchildren, Dallas R. (Ulisa) Hayes III and their children, Taylor Thomas, Hayden Hayes, Triston Hayes and Colton Hayes; and grandchildren, Dustin R. Hayes and Lacie (Scott) Herman and Samantha Barnes and her child, Jeremy Colaluca.

Ida was preceded in death by her parents.

William Joseph Healey Jr., 92

PALM SPRINGS, CALIF. – William Joseph Healey Jr., 92, died Nov. 20, 2009, in Palm Springs.

He was born Aug. 4, 1917, to William J. Healey Sr. and Margaret Louise Walsh in Youngstown.

He married M. Wilma Cannon on April 7, 1945 in Youngstown.

He was Terminal Manager of the Youngstown Cartage Company for 26 years, from 1956 until his retirement in 1982.

Between 1936 and 1956, he held management positions with the following companies: Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Buick Youngstown Company, Youngstown White Truck Sales and Ohio Northern Truck Line. He was a long-standing member of the Youngstown Traffic Club for 31 years.

Mr. Healey graduated from The Rayen School, where he was a member of the Varsity Track Team and the “Varsity R” Club. He was an active member of the Y.M.C.A. and attained the Rank of Star Scout, earning 28 Merit Badges as a member of Troop 28 of the Boy Scouts of America.

He is survived by his wife, the former M. Wilma Cannon of Palm Springs, whom he married April 7, 1945; daughter, Colleen (Healey) Wick of Palm Springs; sons, G. Christopher Healey of Canfield and William J. Healey III of Palm Springs; seven grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Alice Cannon Gray of Youngstown.

He was preceded in death by a twin brother, who died at birth; also his brothers, John D. and Richard J. Healey; and his brother-in-law, Robert Gray.

A memorial Mass was held at the Our Lady of Solitude Catholic Church in Palm Springs on Nov. 25, 2009 and was followed by a luncheon reception at the O’Donnell Golf Club in Palm Springs.

Interment was at the Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, Calif.

Arrangements were handled by the Wiefels Funeral Services.

Michael J. Kohler, 85

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel for Michael J. Kohler, 85, who died Monday afternoon at Briarfield Manor Nursing Center in Austintown.

He was born Nov. 21, 1924 in Youngstown, a son of George and Margaret (Kollar) Hubert, and he resided in this area all of his life.

He was a 1942 graduate of Youngstown East High School and he also attended Youngstown College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II.

He worked as a maintenance superintendent for General Motors in Lordstown for 11 years before retiring in 1989.

After his retirement, he started a tree business known as Kohler’s Green Acres.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Western Star Lodge. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite. He loved the outdoors, his family, friends and animals.

Michael was a kind and loving man and he will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Marion L. Folkwein, whom he married Sept. 11, 1959. He also leaves behind two children, Judy (Larry) Lynn and David (Diane) Kohler, both of Canfield; a grandson, Larry Michael Lynn of Canfield; and a sister-in-law, Pearl Folkwein.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jo Ann Miller Kloos, 44

MERCER, PA. – Jo Ann Miller Kloos, 44, passed away at home, Nov. 24, 2009.

She worked at Tod Childrens Hospital for 20 years as a nurse and this last year at Northside Emergency.

She was a member of the Mercer United Methodist Church.

Jo Ann was a graduate of Youngstown State University School of Nursing.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel; two sons, Matthew and Paul; her father, Eugene Miller of Venice, Fla.; two sisters, Paula Barany of Poland and Laura Keltz of Columbiana; and two brothers, Stanley Miller of Monaca, Pa and Gerald Kaufman of Youngstown.

Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home in Mercer.

Memorial services will be held at the Mercer United Methodist Church on Saturday at 11 a.m.


Eugene G. Malmsberry, 81

BELOIT – Eugene G. Malmsberry 81, died at 9:55 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant View North in Damascus.

He was born on Nov. 15, 1928 on the family farm on Malmsberry Road in Beloit. He was the son of the late Russell E. and Edith M. (Gunder) Malmsberry.

Gene was the sixth generation to live on the farm all his life. He retired in 1990 as the founder/owner/operator of the G. M. Excavation Company and a dairy farmer.

He had served for 49 years as a Traffic Police Officer working at gate No. 5 at the Canfield Fairgrounds. He was a member of the East Goshen Friends Church, a charter member of the Goshen Center Ruritans and a member of the Farm Bureau. He was a former bus driver for the West Branch School District.

He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Weingart, whom he married on Dec. 24, 1946; two sons, Timothy Mark Malmsberry of Beloit and Terry Jon (Lynne) Malmsberry of Beloit; three grandchildren, Jeri (Matt) Close of Salem and Nathen and Kacie Malmsberry, both of Beloit; and one great-granddaughter, Kennedy Close of Salem.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Verda Cunningham Malmsberry and a brother, Rolland Jay Malmsberry.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Baker of the church officiating. Burial will follow at the East Goshen Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be held on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary Marsilio, 99

AUSTINTOWN – Friends and family are invited to share prayers Friday morning at 9 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for Mary Marsilio, 99, who died Monday evening at Meridian Arms Care Center.

Mary was born Feb. 4, 1910 in Bugnara L'Aquila, Italy, the daughter of Leonardo and Angelina Salamone DiTommaso. She came to this country in 1934. She was a homemaker and a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and its Holy Name Society. Mary loved to cook for her family and friends and will be remembered for always putting her family first and for her terrific Sunday family dinners.

Her husband, Vittorino Guy Marsilio, whom she married Nov. 23, 1930, died Nov. 16, 1991.

She is survived by her daughter, Angelina (Neil) Frasca of Austintown; a son, Henry D. (Joan) Marsilio of Boardman; a daughter-in-law, Nina Marsilio of Austintown; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Emilio L. Marsilio; a brother, Dominic; and two sisters, Bambino Incani and Anna Theresa.

There are no calling hours at Mary’s request.

The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to either the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church or the Meridian Arms Activities Center.

James Minno, 48

BOARDMAN – James Minno, 48, passed away Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 27, 1961 in Youngstown, a son of the late Nunzie Joseph Minno and Donna Jean Riley Minno.

Family includes his stepmother, Ann Minno of Youngstown; two sisters, Donna Cappitte of Struthers and Charlene Minno of Campbell; two brothers, Joe (Paula) Minno of Bloomsburg, Pa. and Patrick (Amanda) Minno of Struthers; and a stepdaughter, Amy and Jimmy.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

James was a 1979 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a former iron worker.

Calling hours will be at the Fabrizio Funeral Home, 619 East Indianola Ave. in Youngstown on Friday, Nov. 27, from 10 a.m. to noon.

His services will be at the Immaculate Conception at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, 2009.

Helen Novakoski, 91

YOUNGSTOWN – Helen Novakoski, 91, formerly of Campbell, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at Beeghly Oaks Nursing Facility.

She was born Oct. 23, 1918 in Oliphant, Pa., daughter of the late George and Sophie Zavatcan Midlick.

She worked in housekeeping at St. Elizabeth Hospital for 13 years, retiring in 1982.

She was a member of St. Nicholas Church, a former member of the Holy Cross Polish National Catholic Church and St. Joseph the Provider Church. She was a member of Campbell Senior Citizens and Society Adoration Most Blessed Sacrament.

Helen enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking and loved playing cards and had a card group that came to her home.

She is survived by her daughters, Margie (Tony) Frattaroli of Struthers and Paula Kirk and her daughter, Vanessa in Campbell; a brother, George Midlick in Austintown; three grandchildren, Vanessa Kirk, Felicia Tofil and Tony Frattaroli Jr.; and seven great-grandchildren, Carlisie, Mackenzie, Taylor, Mitchell, Nina and Joey.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Novakoski, he died Jan. 30, 1978; a son, John Wilcheck; brothers, Mike, Joe and Paul Midlick; and a sister, Ann Milakovich.

Visiting hours will be Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Kirila Funeral Home Inc., 258 Poland Ave. in Struthers.

A procession will leave the funeral home at 9 a.m. on Saturday for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers. Burial will be at St. John Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of the Valley.

The family would thank the staff at Hospice and Beeghly Oaks for there wonderful care.

BOARDMAN - Madolyn F. Parker, 94, passed away peacefully Monday afternoon, Nov. 23, 2009, at Assumption Village in North Lima.

Madolyn was born July 22, 1915 in Bayard, W.Va., a daughter of the late Berkley and Cleo Maude Holler Mosser, was raised in Akron, and settled in the Youngstown area in the late-1930s.

She was a homemaker and also worked as a waitress for various local restaurants.

She often attended the Old North Church in Canfield, enjoyed bingo, was a great cook, and most importantly, loved spending time with her family.

Her husband, James S. Parker, whom she married in 1939, passed away Jan. 30, 1955.

Mrs. Parker leaves two daughters, Glenda (Henry) Spencer of Youngstown and Sandra (Robert) Stanko of Canfield; six grandchildren, Randy Spencer, Sheri (Rob) Pilolli, Lisa Spencer, Rob (Jennifer) Stanko, Jill (George) Houser and Nicole (Ken) Burrows; and 10 great-grandchildren, Danielle, Anthony, Camryn, Cole, Robbie, Madison, Carly, Rocco, Gino and Marco.

Madolyn will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Besides her husband, a brother, Dorwin Mosser, is deceased.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a memorial service which will be held on Friday, Nov. 27, at 1 p.m. in the Fireside Room at the Old North Church on Herbert Road in Canfield.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Kinnick Funeral Home in Youngstown.

Memorial contributions may be made in Madolyn’s name to the Old North Church.

Michael R. Peace, 22

EDINBURG, PA. – Michael R. Peace 22, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident

Michael was born in Kokomo, Ind. on Feb. 20, 1987

He was employed as a laborer for Outside Services Inc., and as a clerk at the Union Township Advanced Auto Store.

“On Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, we lost our Michael, but his crazy wild spirit lives on inside of us all.” He was a great guy with a big heart and smile that could make anyone feel good. He had the most contagious laugh and huge personality.

Michael loved the outdoors.

He is sadly missed and forever loved by his parents, Randy and Donna Peace of Edinburg; a sister, Meagan and fiance, Josh Peterson; brother, Nathan; sister, Laura; grandma, Ruth Peace; grandmother, LaVerne Regner; and aunts, uncles, cousins and so many caring friends.

He was preceded in death by grandfathers, Leonard Regner and Allen Peace.

Calling hours will be this Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Terry A. Cunningham Funeral Home, 203 Oak St. in Bessemer, Pa. and on Saturday, Nov. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon.

A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, Nov. 28, at noon with graveside services at Castle View Memorial Gardens.

John Popovec, 88

POLAND – Prayers will begin Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel followed by a funeral of Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church for John Popovec, 88, who died Tuesday afternoon at Hospice House.

John was born Jan. 21, 1921 in Youngstown, the son of Michael and Mary Popovec.

He had served in the Marine Corp during World War II as a Sergeant and among other missions participated in the attack on Iwo Jima. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Popovec had worked as a carpenter for the U.S. Steel Corporation for many years before retiring in 1980. He was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church which he helped to build, and was a member of its Altar and Rosary Society and in 2005 was named its “Father Of The Year.”

He is survived by his wife, the former Virginia Gendron, whom he married May 14, 1946; three daughters, Mary Castell of Georgia, Jeanne (Steve) Hamner of Georgia and Nancy Popovec, with whom he made his home in Poland; one son, Dr. John (Alberta) Popovec of Canfield; two sisters, Mary Cirka of Pennsylvania and Helen Knapic of New Mexico; two brothers, Michael (Elayne) Popovec of Boardman and Robert (Karen) Popovec of Austintown; eight grandchildren, Pamela Otterson, Jennifer Popovec, Christina Davis, Stephanie Schiavone, Nicole Bergen, Krista Brown, Jonathan Hamner and Lindsey Hamner; and nine great-grandchildren.

The Popovec family would like to thank the staff at Assumption Village and Hospice House for all of their loving care.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, where a Parastas service followed by a Rosary service will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in John’s memory.

Robert E. Sadlak, 78

YOUNGSTOWN – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Vienna for Robert E. Sadlak, 78, who died at home on Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Mr. Sadlak was born in Campbell on Feb. 6, 1931, a son of Michael and Julia K. Ondercin Sadlak.

During the Korean War, Robert served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He attended college at the University of Tampa, Youngstown State University and the University of Akron, receiving several degrees in various fields. He was employed by the U.S. Post Office, retiring on disability years ago. He was a member of the Queen of the Holy Rosary Church.

Robert was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Foycik and by his sisters, Mary Kalis and Anna Long.

He is survived by his brother, John Sadlak of Warren; his sister, Esther Sadlak, with whom he made his home; and by several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation will take place Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market St. in Boardman, where the rosary will be recited at 5 p.m.

Graveside services will take place on Monday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. at Belmont Park Cemetery, where a Marine Corps Honor Guard ceremony will also be held.

Joey Jay Scott, 52

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS – Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Bethel Church of God In Christ for Mr. Joey Jay Scott, 52, formerly of Youngstown, who departed this life Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at University Hospital in Cleveland.

Mr. Scott was born Nov. 30, 1956 in Youngstown, a son of Ezekiel N. and Fannie F. Stanton Scott.

He was a 1976 graduate of South High School, and graduated from the Allen Brady School of Electronics.

He had been employed with the Borden Dairy for 17 years, and was a medical supply carrier with Phar Med Corporation, retiring in 2005. He was a member of Teamster Union 377 and the Club of Historical Oldsmobiles.

Besides his mother, Fannie Scott of Youngstown, he leaves his beloved and devoted wife, the former Vernell Washington, whom he married June 11, 1997; two sons, Jalen and Julian, both of Middleburg Hts.; Clachara Scott, whom he raised as his daughter; two sisters, LaDedria “DeeDee” Cross of Elyria and Joyce Scott of Maryland; and a host of family and friends.

His father, Ezekiel W. Scott; and two brothers, Alonzo and Wangie Scott, preceded him in death.

Friends may call Saturday from 9 10 a.m. at the church.

Arrangements are entrusted to the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.
