Memphis in town
for three games

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown SteelHounds play host to the Memphis RiverKings for three games, starting Thursday at 7:05 p.m. at the Chevrolet Centre.

Games will also be played Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The SteelHounds were 8-2-1 in February, setting a franchise record for victories in a month.

Youngstown was led in February by Chris Richards and Jeff Christian, who combined for 21 goals and 31 assists in 11 games.

THUNDER

Player moves

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley Thunder have been assigned offensive-defensive lineman Mike Sacco and kicker Nick Terracina.

Sacco, who played at the University of Toledo, is a native of Sewickley, Pa. He is in his first season in the arena2 league.

Terracina earned two letters with Youngstown State, where he was honorable mention All-Gateway Conference in 2003 (he was also named to the all-newcomer team) and Gateway All-Academic honorable mention in 2004.

This is also Terracina's first season in af2.

Mooney names
boys soccer coach

YOUNGSTOWN — Larry Lencyk was named boys soccer coach at Cardinal Mooney High School.

Lencyk has 20 years of coaching experience, including seven years as an assistant at Mooney. He has coached in the Boardman competitive league, coached and sponsored a men's soccer team and has coached in the Catholic Youth League for 20 years. He also serves as league vice president.

Steelers coming
to play hoops

LOWELLVILLE — The Lowellville Fire Department is sponsoring a benefit basketball game between LCAA Sports and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The game is scheduled for March 14 at Lowellville High School. Pre-game will start at 6:30 p.m. and the game at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at The Balloon Doctor in Struthers, Geno's Restaurant, Melillo's Tavern, Ross Market and the Mount Carmel Club. Tickets may also be purchased any Tuesday or Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the South Side fire station in Lowellville or by calling (330) 559-1745 or (330) 502-0801.

Indoor track

ALLIANCE — Boardman High's Breanne Romeo won the 400 meters in 60.69 seconds and she was third in the 55 meters (7.67) at the Mount Union College High School Open Indoor track and field meet Friday. Lea Byers was third in the 800 (2:36.94) and she was fourth in the pole vault (6 feet, 6 inches). Lauren Agnew was fifth in the 1600 (5:36.67).

Competing for the Spartans Sunday at the Oberlin High School Open indoor meet were Carrie Mavrikis second in the pole vault (9-0). Boardman's Marie Mooney, Becca Sammartino, Danielle Burin and Corey Carter placed second in the 4x200 relay (1:55.56). Carter placed third in the high jump (5-0). Burin finished sixth in the 55 meters (7.95) and Sammartino was seventh (7.98).

NAHL expands

FRISCO, TEXAS — The North American Hockey League has approved the membership of the Kenai River Brown Bears for the 2007-08 season.

The team will be based in Soldotna, Alaska.

New martial arts
studio opening

CHAMPION — Dave Durch is opening a studio for fitness and martial arts at 1107 North River Road. Durch has been in the martial arts field for 40 years and culminated his achievements by being an undefeated national champion when he recently retired.

It is designed for retrofit, component cars and the street rod world.

Coach accused

AKRON— A high school football coach pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to a charge of sexual battery involving a female student.

Buchtel High School's football coach, Claude Brown, 41, was arrested at the school Monday. He was released from jail after posting bond following his arraignment in Akron Municipal Court.

The charge involves a 17-year-old girl, Lt. Rick Edwards said.

Brown has served as the football coach at Buchtel for 10 seasons, compiling an 88-30 record. He also teaches history at the public school.

Akron schools Superintendent Sylvester Small said Brown would be put on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of his court case.

LeBron expecting
second child

CLEVELAND — LeBron James will soon fill out his backcourt.

Cleveland's All-Star forward and his girlfriend, Savannah Brinson, are expecting their second child in June, James revealed before the Cavaliers game Monday night against the New Orleans Hornets.
