BOARDMAN Former state senator Harry Meshel of Youngstown will be the guest speaker Monday at the Curbstone Coaches' noon luncheon session at the Blue Wolf Catering Hall.
Italian-American HOF
names James Pipino
The Mahoning Valley Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame has named James "Doc" Pipino of Niles is its 2007 Man-of-the-Year.
Pipino will be honored at the club's annual Scholarship Banquet on May 15 at Vernon's Café at 6 p.m. In addition, 11 Valley students will be receiving $500 college scholarships.
Pipino, a 1956 graduate of John Carroll University, where he was a all-conference first team athlete in football. He later taught and coached football, basketball and golf at Warren St. Mary's High School. Pipino is also an inductee in the Warren Sports Hall of Fame Inductee, insurance professional at the Arthur J. Gallagher Company and serves on the Niles Community Services Board, Southwoods Surgery Center, Inc., and Trumbull-Mahoning-Columbiana Easter Seals.
Pipino is on the Religious Leader Parish Council at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Lay Director, CCD Teacher, a Parochial School coach and Mt. Carmel Athletic Director. A past member of the Youngstown Diocesan Catholic Charities Board, he was on the Advisory Board to the Antoinine Sisters, Warren JFK Values and Vision Campaign, a past Member of the Warren JFK School Board of Trustees, and recipient of the JFK Golden Eagle Award.
Pancake selected
MVP of PAC softball
WEXFORD, Pa. Jennifer Pancake, a senior pitcher for the Westminster College softball team from Boardman High, has been selected to the 2007 Presidents' Athletic Conference first team as well as being named the PAC Most Valuable Player.
Pancake's teammate, pitcher-first baseman Jennifer Emery of New Castle and Laurel High, also was named to the PAC first team.
And their coach, Jan Reddinger, was named PAC Coach of the Year.
Two other Westminster players also made the All-PAC team. Stephanie Cornicelli, a senior catcher-outfielder for Westminster from Howland High, was named to the second team, while junior infielder Maria Joseph (New Castle High) was tabbed as an honorable mention.
Tuminello named
to Rimington list
ATLANTA, Ga. Kevin Tuminello, a senior center for the Georgia Tech football team from Boardman High, has been selected to the Spring Watch List for the 2007 Rimington Trophy as the nation's top center.
Tuminello, who will be entering his third year as the starting center for the Yellow Jackets, will be trying to become the first Georgia Tech player to win the award.
The son of James and Debra Tuminello of Boardman, Kevin has started 27 career games, including 26 in a row.
Last season, he was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic Football Team for the second straight year.
Tuminello is majoring in building construction.
Baseball Oldtimers
YOUNGSTOWN The Youngstown Baseball Oldtimers Association will hold its regular monthly meeting Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Kramer Field.
In other business, the dinner scheduled for May 20 at the Struthers Knights of Columbus Hall has been canceled.
Tom Miller selected
to judge fights
MINERAL RIDGE Tom Miller has been selected as a judge for two upcoming title fights.
Friday he will be in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to judge the Top Rank Promotions' WBA lightweight championship bout (the title is vacant) between Prawet Singwancha of Thailand (30-2) and Jose Miguel Cotto of Salinas, P.R. (28-1).
On May 26 he will be in Anaheim, Calif., for the Golden Boy Promotions' WBO lightweight title tilt between current champion Mike Katsidis of Toowoomba, QLD, Australia (22-0), and challenger Joan Guzman of Santo Domingo, D.R. (27-0).
Napolitan qualified
for BMX Tour
AUSTINTOWN Anthony Napolitan, the 2006 AST Dew Tour's BMX Dirt champion, is among the pre-qualified athletes expected to compete on the 2007 tour.
Napolitan, of Austintown, is the top qualifier in his specialty, which includes among 18 others.
The five stops on this year's schedule are: Panasonic Open, Baltimore, June 21-24; Right Guard Open, July 19-22, Cleveland; Vans Invitational, Aug. 16-19, Portland; Toyota Challenge, Sept. 20-23, Salt Lake City, PlayStation Pro, Oct. 18-21, Orlando, Fla.
Tickets to the Panasonic, Right Guard, Toyoto Challenge and PlayStation are available via Ticketmaster.
Entering its third year, the AST Dew Tour is the most-watched and attended action sports property in the world.
Attendance for the 2006 Tour totaled nearly 250,000 and an average of 38 million viewers via NBC and USA each year.

YOUNGSTOWN Fernando's Wedgewood Pizza won the Pacentrani City Bocce League championship by beating Clemente Funeral Home.
Fernando's team includes: Sal Sorice, Nunzio Napolitano, Mario DiIullo, Dominic Infante, Nick Gentile, Tony Sorbara, two-time champion Bob Camardo, two-time champ and MVP Gene Russo and three-time champion Tom George.
The multiple champions competed at the Arco Club, Pacentrani Club and St. Anthony's in Struthers.
Fitch HOF update
AUSTINTOWN The next meeting of the Fitch High School Athletic Hall of Fame is May 30 at 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.
Public involvement and input is sought from residents, Fitch alumni, current students and present and retired faculty and staff members.
