Salem defeats Girard, Fitch in triangular



Canfield went 1-2 in a trip to Uniontown.

AUSTINTOWN — Salem handed Girard its first loss off the season and the Quakers also defeated Austintown Fitch in a triangular match Saturday at the Falcons' gym.

Salem defeated Girard, 25-15, 25-13, and Fitch, 25-18, 25-11. In the other match, Girard needed three sets to defeat Fitch, 21-15, 25-15, 25-16.

Salem was led by Sarah Brobeck with one ace, 10 kills and one block, Brittany Gregory with two aces, six kills and four blocks, and Taylor Toothman with 18 assists.

For Girard, Cassie Guerrieri had five kills, nine digs, one ace and seven service points while Mari Flynn had five kills..

For Salem against Fitch, Amy Scullion had 11 kills and one block, Brittany Gregory one ace, nine kills and one block and Taylor Toothman 29 assists.

For Girard against Fitch, Aysha Nickels had 40 assists, 14 serving points, five aces and four digs, Olivia Bucci 11 kills and one block and Mari Flynn 11 kills.

Girard is 11-1. The Indians are ranked No. 10 in Division III.

Salem is ranked No. 12 in Division II.

UNIONTOWN — The Canfield High volleyball team won one of three matches in the Lake Asics Volleyball Tournament.

The Cardinals (7-6) beat Canton South but lost to Norton and Lake.

Against Norton, Canfield was led by Courtney Rothbauer with 11 service points, one ace, 37 total attempts and nine assists, Kelsey Owen 25 total attempts and 11 kills and Jackie Nentwick 11 serve receptions and one dig.

Norton was led by Maggie Yavorsky with eight points, three aces, 24 total attempts and 11 assists, and Jessica McGlone and Jill Dittmer with five blocks and six kills apiece.

Canfield's win over Canton South was led by Owen with 12 service points and one ace, Jackie Nentwick 13 total attempts and five kills, Rachel O'Hara, 20 total attempts and seven assists; and Katie Williams with seven serve receptions and one dig.

Canton South's leaders were Tanina Marraccini with 12 total points, two aces and seven kills and Mandy Rex with 18 assists.

For Canfield against Lake, Rothbauer had four points and two aces, Kalie Luklan 14 total attempts and four kills, Rachel O'Hara 11 total attempts and six assists and Owen five serve receptions and four digs.

Owen was selected to the all-tournament team.

Brookfield 25-25,
Struthers 23-20

BROOKFIELD — Morgan Bonekovic had six kills, seven digs and two blocks while Taralee Williams had 11 assists, nine digs and three points for the Warriors.

Crestview 25-25,
Brookfield 14-18

BROOKFIELD — Chelsea Bowker and Rachell Storm each had four kills and two blocks while Julie Simmons had three kills and three points. Elyse Mongillo had 12 assists, five digs, three kills and 11 points for Crestview.

For Brookfield (6-4), Bonekovic had three points, 12 kills, 10 digs and two blocks. Williams had three points, 26 assists and seven digs, while Megan Reiser had three digs and two kills.
