INDIANAPOLIS Youngstown State junior Bethany Anderson was named Horizon League athlete of the week.
Anderson posted a mark of 58 feet, 83/4 inches, to eclipse her previous school record by 4 inches at the Doug Raymond Open Saturday.
Anderson is a six-time Horizon League champion and owns four school records.
Shayne York was also recognized as a top performer of the week by posting personal-best marks in the long jump and triple jump at the Doug Raymond Open.
Phantoms to honor YSU football team
BOARDMAN The Mahoning Valley Phantoms will honor the Youngstown State football team during Friday's game against Traverse City (Mich.) at the Ice Zone.
Gametime is scheduled for 7 p.m.
YSU coach Jon Heacock will drop the puck to begin the game, and members of the team will be recognized during the first period break.
"The Phantoms' game gives us another opportunity to share the community's pride in the Penguins," Bruce J. Zoldan, president and CEO of B.J. Alan Company, the parent company of the Phantoms.

*HUBBARD The fifth annual 9-pin no-tap scotch doubles benefit tournament sponsored by the Youngstown USBC Women's Bowling Association will be held Feb. 2-4 at Bell-Wick Bowl.
The categories are two women, two men, mixed pairs and adult/junior. Entry fee of $20 per doubles and forms available at area alleys should be sent to the YWBA, 2703 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown 44509. Pre-registration deadline is Jan. 31.
All bowlers will receive a "thank you" gift. A silent auction, raffle and door prizes will also be available. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society, Hospice of the Valley and Jessica Moorhead Foundation.
The benefit's theme is "come knock down pins to help strike out cancer."
*YOUNGSTOWN George Finelli rolled 1,425 to win 'C' division for 60 to 64-year-olds at the conclusion of the 2007 Senior Singles bowling tournament at West Side and Wedgewood lanes.
Jim Ellis was runner-up with 1,396 and Frank Tisler's six-game score was 1,335.
In 'D' division for 55 to 59-year-olds, Dennis Hamm and Nick Bellino were 1-2 with 1,421 and 1,416.
First-place money and plaques were awarded.
The next senior tournament will be the John Bossone Memorial Masters, Feb. 10-11 and 17-18 at Amron, Bell-Wick, Holiday and Wedgewood. The Bossone event is for GYBA and YWBA members 50 and older. Bowlers 60-69 and 70-up can cash in separate divisions. Cost is $65 per bowler. Entries are available at bowling centers or by calling Ted Bundy (330)
*YOUNGSTOWN Entries are now available at all bowling centers for the Youngstown USBC Women's Bowling Association's 8th annual 9-pin no-tap handicap tournament.
The four-women's team event will be at Kay Lanes in Girard, Jan. 20-28. Start times are 1 p.m. Saturday, noon or 2 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. weekdays.
*NILES Chaney's Cory Tacsik shot his first 300 game early in the competition of the 5th annual McKinley Lanes Martin Luther King high school team tournament.
Eleven boys and nine girls teams representing 10 area school districts participated.
All teams bowled two traditional games, then five Baker system games. The top five boys and girls teams with the highest pinfall advanced to the final round. Ten more Baker games were bowled to determine first place.
Niles High's girls won with 1681, followed by McDonald (1614), Austintown Fitch (1608), Champion (1444) and Boardman (1418).
McDonald's boys beat out Fitch, 1941 to 1887, while Boardman No. 1 took third with 1878, Hubbard fourth with 1826 and Boardman No. 2 fifth with 1776.
Other girls teams were: Chaney (2290), Hubbard (2146), Canfield (2088) and Liberty (1911). Also ran boys teams were: Warren Harding (2683), Canfield (2648), Champion (2576), Chaney (2574), Liberty (2570) and Niles (2513).
Super Bowl party
BROOKFIELD Brookfield Youth Baseball-Softball Parents Club will hold a Super Bowl Party at the Brookfield Fire Hall Feb. 4. starting a 5 p.m., with complete rib and chicken dinner by Taylor's Catering.
The football game will be shown on three bigscreen TVs. Tickets will cost $60 per couple and $40 per single.

Major joins SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. Andy Major, a 1988 Slippery Rock University graduate and former football student-athlete, has returned to SRU after more than 15 years in the professional sports industry and will serve as assistant to the Athletic Director for fundraising and sponsorships.
Mercer HOF
MERCER, Pa. Brothers Martin F. "Marty" and Mont Mattocks and Coach Dan Weikal have been inducted into the seventh class of the Mercer Area High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Martin was a two-sport standout, cross country and basketball at Mercer High, while Mont was the starting guard on the undefeated 1966 Mustangs boys basketball state championship team and he also ran cross country.
