Soccer team
defeats Citadel
CHARLESTON, S.C. The Youngstown State women's soccer team concluded the Citadel Adidas Soccer Classic by knocking off the Bulldogs, 3-2, with two late goals at WLI field. Junior Christi Williams scored her first career goal for the Penguins (2-6) as well as the game winning score.
YSU scored four minutes into the game off a cross from Williams to freshman Jodi Bowlen marking her first goal. Citadel freshman Rachelle Ornelas evened the scored up 14 minutes later on an unassisted goal that went into the upper right corner of the net.
The Penguins defense helped keep the score tied until the 53:37 mark as senior Holli Knox headed the ball in the net off a corner kick putting the Bulldogs up 2-1.
YSU's offense was fired up and pressed into Bulldog territory at 74 minutes of play. Freshman Jordan Gapczynski capitalized on a pass from Carrie Wack to tie the game at 2-2.
The Penguins went for the win four minutes later. Williams sealed the fate of the Bulldogs off a pass from Bowlen giving YSU the 3-1 victory.

The Penguins will play again on Sept. 29 at home against Valparaiso at 4 p.m.
Volleyball team
wins twice
YOUNGSTOWN Two solid and well-rounded team efforts led the Youngstown State volleyball team to victories over St. Francis (Pa.), 30-23, 26-30, 31-29, 30-28, and Duquesne, 30-22, 30-27, 30-27, on Saturday. The Penguins are 8-8.
Against St. Francis, freshman Ruth Boscaljon led four Penguins in double figures with 15 kills and a .394 hitting percentage. Senior Cari Leslie and sophomores Ebony Barbosa and Karla Everhart each posted double-doubles. Leslie tallied 10 kills and 10 digs while Barbosa pounded 10 kills with 14 digs. Everhart was credited with 44 assists and 13 digs.
In her first start of the season, junior Jessica Fraley added 10 kills. Senior Janelle McDonald, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 20 digs to lead the Penguins defensively and senior Amanda Cindric added 13 digs .
Runners perform
BOWLING GREEN Youngstown State senior Nick Kruse finished 23rd to lead the men's squad and every member of the women's team improved from the season opening meet at Saturday's Mel Brodt Invitational.

Phantoms lose
BLAINE, Minn. The Bismarck Bobcats spotted the Mahoning Valley Phantoms an early goal before reeling off four straight of their own in Saturday's 4-3 victory at the North American Hockey League Showcase.
Chris Fairbanks scored twice for the Phantoms (1-3) and Alden Hirschfeld added a goal. The Phantoms outshot Bismarck 34-26 as Ryan Merriam fell to 1-1, making 22 saves. The Bobcats were 2 for 6 on the power play while the Phantoms finished 1 for 6.
The Phantoms' season-opening 16-game road trip continues Friday when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face the undefeated U.S. National Under-18 Team.
Zordich named
player of week
YOUNGSTOWN Cardinal Mooney's Mike Zordich was named the Steel Valley Conference player of the week for his performance in the Warren Harding game last Saturday.
In the 28-13 victory, the junior fullback scored twice. The 6-1, 225-pounder gained 89 yards rushing and 42 receiving. As a linebacker on defense, Zordich made 10 tackles.
Swallow earns
PAC honor
WEXFORD, Pa. Bobby Swallow, a sophomore quarterback for the Washington & Jefferson College football team from West Branch High, has been named Presidents' Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Swallow (6-2, 210) was recognized for his superlative performance in leading the Presidents to a 35-0 swamping of Hanover College in Hanover, Ind.
Swallow completed 90 percent of his pass attempts by going 18-for-20 for 210 yards and four touchdowns of 8, 29, 10 and 29) yards.
His 18 completions, 210 yards and four TDs were personal career highs at W&J.
