Pirates activate Wells earlier than expected

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Kip Wells wasn't expected to return until the All-Star break from a medical problem that's uncommon for major league pitchers. He'll beat that deadline by three weeks.

Wells, the right-hander who led all major leaguers with 18 losses last season, was activated off the 15-day disabled list Sunday and will start Tuesday night in Kansas City. Right-hander Victor Santos went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right rotator cuff, and outfielder Jody Gerut was moved from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.
