Beal sets record

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Senior Ross Beal (Uniontown) carded a school-record 63 during the final round of the IPFW Classic and finished with a school-record three-round score of 196 to win the IPFW Fall Classic at Deer Track Golf Course by nine shots.

The Penguins finished second with a three-round 835 (274-280-281) coming up just three shots behind Detroit's 835. Loyola was third with an 841 while Cleveland State was fourth carding an 845.

Beal had rounds of 65 and 68 on Monday and finished with a tournament-low tying round of 63 on Tuesday. Beal had 25 birdies during the tournament finishing with a 17-under-par total for the event. Loyola's Thomas Greene placed second with a 205, but shot a 63 during the second round on Monday.

Beal wasn't the only Penguin to card exceptional numbers during the event.

Junior Ryan Stocke tied for 10th with a three-round 209. Stocke had rounds of 69, 68 and 72 during the event. Sophomore Tim Morrow placed 12th with a 211 finishing with rounds of 69, 72 and 70.

Women take third
at Detroit Fall Classic

REDFORD, Mich. -- The YSU women's golf team placed third at the six-team Detroit Fall Classic which concluded on Tuesday. Freshman Katie Rogner and sophomore Brittany Stillwagon led the charge with top-10 finishes.

YSU finished with a three-round team score of 657 following rounds of 328 and 329. Oakland won the event with a 641 while Dayton placed second with a 654.

Rogner tied for fourth with a 161 (81-80). It was her third top-five finish this fall.

Placing ninth was Stillwagon who had a two-round 166 (82-84). Mollie Boney rebounded to tie for 10th place with a 167 (86-81). Also tying for 10th was Felicia Ciotola who had a 167 (83-84). Brittany Jones tied for 16th with a 169 (82-87).

Hockey loses 2

BOARDMAN — The YSU hockey team dropped two shootout decisions as they opened College Hockey Mid-America League play.

After fighting through seven rounds of a shootout Friday night, the 28th ranked Penguins fell 3-2 at Indiana (Pa.).

Saturday's result was eerily similar. YSU had a 5-2 lead during the second period, before losing 6-5 in a six-round shootout against Pitt.

Mike Poljak, the team's leading scorer a year ago, and last season's ACHA rookie of the year, suffered a concussion against IUP. Poljak is expected to miss two weeks.

Phantom named
to league list

FRISCO, Texas — The North American Hockey League announced forward Alden Hirschfeld of the Mahoning Valley Phantoms made its honorable mention list for last week.

Hirschfeld scored two goals and two assists, helping the Phantoms earn a weekend split at Alpena (Mich.)

Midget Phantoms
finish second

DES MOINES, Iowa — The line of Spencer Jordan, Andy Cramer, and Jordan Sims combined for 23 points in five games, leading the Mahoning Valley Midget AAA Phantoms to a 4-1 record and a second-place finish at the Midget Buc Bowl.

Jordan had five goals and four assists.

The Phantoms opened the weekend with a 4-1 win over the California Stars and a 1-0 win over the Utah Chadders on Friday. The squad followed those wins up with a 2-1 victory over the Alaska Wolves on Saturday, and a 3-2 double overtime triumph in the semifinals against the Dallas Alliance on Sunday.

The Phantoms came up one win short of their second tournament title of the year, falling 3-2 in overtime to Minnesota-Duluth.

PAC honors

*WEXFORD, Pa. — The Presidents' Athletic Conference has selected Westminster's Brittany McKee (Hubbard) and Grove City's Michael Manahan as Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Scholar-Athletes of the Month for September.

McKee, a senior soccer defender, anchors a defense that posted six shutouts during the month while guiding the Titans to a 6-2-2 record. She also scored the team's only goal in a 1-1 tie against 2006 NCAA tournament participant Aurora. In the classroom McKee maintains a 3.64 grade-point average, majoring in speech communication. She is the president of Lambda Pi Eta (communication honorary society) and is the PAC SAAC Vice President.

*WEXFORD, Pa. — Bethany sophomore Jason Straw was named PAC offensive player of the week for men's soccer.

Straw scored three times and one assist in victories over Thiel and Waynesburg.
