Ohio teams give fans reasons to celebrate

Ohio State, topping various polls, still has to face some tough competition.

What a great weekend to be an Ohio sports fan.

The Cleveland Indians survived a marathon Game 2 of the American League Championship Series in Fenway Park, defeating the Boston Red Sox 13-6 in 11 innings to even their best-of-seven series at 1-1.

Former Red Sox outfielder Trot Nixon, an offseason free agent pickup for the Indians, drove in the go-ahead run as the Boston bullpen imploded in the 11th inning.

Now the series heads to Jacobs Field, starting with Game 3 tonight. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown shortly after 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, the rash of upsets that have saturated college football claimed two more victims Saturday, and the result has Ohio State on top of all three major polls and the first Bowl Championship Standings, released Sunday afternoon.

The Buckeyes, who have the nation's top scoring defense, haven't exactly faced a murderer's row of opponents this season. Ohio State is 7-0, with its two most impressive wins thus far at Washington and at Purdue.

But that will change over the season's final five weeks, with home games against the surprise of the Big Ten, Illinois, and Wisconsin, and road trips to Penn State and Michigan.

And speaking of surprising, the Cleveland Browns, sporting on the NFL's highest-rated offenses, kept the Miami Dolphins winless, 41-31, Sunday, and improved their record to 3-3.

Quarterback Derek Anderson hooked up with receiver Braylon Edwards for three touchdown passes, as the Browns jumped out to a 24-3 lead, then watched the Dolphins rally to 27-24 before pulling away in the fourth quarter.

The Browns have a bye next weekend, then travel to St. Louis to face the winless Rams Oct. 28, then they play host to the struggling Seattle Seahawks the next Sunday.

Could it be possible, when the Browns travel to Heinz Field for a rematch with the rival Steelers, that they could be 5-3?

Anything, it seems, is possible. Especially after this weekend.
