Salem earns share of MAC with victory over Struthers



The unbeaten Quakers can clinch the league crown with another win.

STRUTHERS — Senior middle hitter Brittany Gregory had four aces, eight kills and one block for the Salem High volleyball team, which earned a share of the Metro Athletic Conference title with a 25-6, 25-7, 25-12 win over Struthers on Thursday.

Freshman outside hitter Amy Scullion had three aces and nine kills and junior outside hitter Katie Scullion had four aces and six kills for Salem (19-0, 12-0), which can clinch the title outright with another victory.

Sophomore setter Taylor Benton had three points and sophomore outside hitter Amy Wess had five points, six digs and three hits, for Struthers (3-14, 3-8 MAC).

JVs: Salem 25-25, Struthers 14-8.

Howland 25-25-25,
Canfield 20-20-20

CANFIELD — Kelly Barzak scored 13 points with five aces, eight kills and five blocks for the Tigers (13-6, 7-2 MAC). Taylor Summerfield had four points, nine kills, seven blocks, five digs and 22 assists. Melissa Lubert scored 11 points and she had five kills and two assists.

Poland 25-25-25, Niles 8-9-12

POLAND — Senior setter Ashley Conger had nine points, eight digs, 21 assists and six kills, junior right-side hitter Jill Wollet had six points, six kills and 12 digs and senior defensive specialist Lindsay DelSignore had six digs, 11 points and two kills for Poland (12-6, 8-4 MAC).

Allie Moss had five points and eight digs for Niles.

YOUNGSTOWN — Freshman defensive specialist Jessica Gavin had 22 points and 17 digs, senior middle blocker Antoinette Smith had seven kills and three blocks and junior setter Jacquela Teamor had 21 assists and three aces for Chaney (9-10, 3-1 Steel Valley).

Liz Nidel had 11 points, six aces and two kills, Stephanie Cervi had two kills and Mara Stienis had two blocks and 10 digs for Warren JFK (8-10, 2-4 SVC).

Angeline Rich had 10 points and seven digs for Ursuline (3-14, 2-4), while Dominique Jenkins had six blocks, four kills and six digs and Jessica Yarab had three points and three kills.

AUSTINTOWN — Caitlin O'Patchen had 21 assists, 26 points and 23 kills for Fitch in a Federal League match.

Michelle Basista added 34 digs and Rebecca Evans had 26 for the Falcons. Lindsay VonSchwarz came up with 11 points, nine kills and 15 assists in the loss.

COLUMBIANA — Julie Simmons, Rachell Storm and Kyler Thompson led the way for Crestview (17-1) in an Inter Tri-County League volleyball match Thursday.

Simmons had 10 kills and four digs, while Storm added 14 points, six digs and four kills and Thompson had three kills and three blocks. Elyse Mongillo had 22 assists and 13 points.

Mineral Ridge (4-15) was led by Sarah Garland with 46 digs, while Alayna Spackman added six kills and Alex Ladd had eight assists.

Columbiana 18-20-21

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Brittany Schrieber scored 13 points and added six kills for Springfield (12-6, 9-3 ITCL).

Whitney Yaeger added 11 kills and nine blocks, while Callie Rogers had nine points and 25 assists.

Columbiana (3-12, 2-10 ITCL) was led by Kayla Couchenour with 17 digs, while Katie Douglas had seven kills and four blocks and Emily Fowler 12 assists.

HANOVERTON — Casey Fennis' 30 assists and Abby Miller's 13 points led United. Darlene Woolf added 17 kills and seven digs, while Erin Briceland scored four aces.

South Range was led by Annie Semko with 11 kills and two blocks while Mergan Sosnowski had 30 assists and five kills.

NORTH JACKSON — Jennifer Kolaski scored 15 points with six aces to pace the Bluejays (14-5k, 10-1 ITCL). Alyssa Chine had eight points, five aces, nine kills. Scarlett Chepke had six kills and two blocks.

Emily Ramsay led the Indians (0-17, 0-11) with six points, two aces and five kills. Courtney Smalley had six kills and two blocks. Paula Bergert had six points, two aces, 27 sets and two assists.

HUBBARD — Senior middle hitter Sophie Paddock had eight kills, eight blocks and 10 points; senior middle hitter Maggie Bogdan had 10 kills and eight blocks; junior outside hitter Brittany Lange had 14 kills and senior libero Kim Budd had 12 digs, seven points and two aces for Hubbard (16-2, 12-0 Trumbull Athletic Conference).

LORDSTOWN — Meagan Gibson led the way with 11 kills, five aces and 17 points, while Ashley Gibbs also had 17 points and three digs and Karly Gibbs added 18 assists for Lordstown (19-2) in a Northeastern Athletic Conference match.

Shantil Dickerson had nine kills and four blocks; Karen Pilati had three digs, Jenna Manz had 20 assists, Rachel Agre had eight points and Breanne Gollan had two aces for Mathews (15-4, 10-2 NAC).
