Phantoms tryout camp attracts more than 80 hockey hopefuls



Two games are scheduled today at the Ice Zone in
Boardman.

BOARDMAN — More than 80 junior hockey prospects converged on the Ice Zone Thursday as the Mahoning Valley Phantoms began their four-day invitational tryout camp.

The camp's resumes today with morning practices followed by games at 3 and 6 p.m.

In Thursday's afternoon matchup, Johnny Meo scored once and added an assist to lead Team White #2 to a 4-2 win over Team Orange #1.

Brent Dexter gave Team Orange a 1-0 lead with 3:09 remaining in the second period. After a scramble for the puck to the left of White goaltender Stefan Shively, the puck deflected to Dexter's stick at the top of the crease for an easy tap-in.

Ryan Kumpfmiller tied the game at the 11:34 mark of the third period with a power-play goal. A minute and three seconds later, Dexter recorded his second goal to regain the lead for Team Orange. Chad Boeckman assisted on both of Dexter's goals.

But Team White responded with three goals in a span of 2:57. Philip Peters tied the game at 2-2 with 5:26 left in regulation. Just 32 seconds later, Tucker Brockett scored the game-winner before Meo capped off the scoring at 17:31.

Team White assists

David Wasnick, Adam Chavez, Christian Wiesenberg and Scott Moser were each credited with one assist for Team White.

Johnny Morrow stopped all 10 shots he faced for Team Orange while teammate Shively blocked 12 of 14 opportunities.

For Team White, Garrett Bartus denied all 19 shots he saw as Jordan Tibbett was 15 of 19 on his save chances.

In the evening contest, Team Orange #3 rallied from a 4-2 deficit to force a 4-4 tie with Team White #4.

Matt Kinman opened the scoring with a power play goal from the right point at 10:43 of the first period for a White 1-0 lead. Denny Kramarz extended the lead at 6:37 of the second period with a shot from the right circle past Shane Talarico.

Miles Winter got Team Orange on the scoreboard at 9:37 mark. Using a defenseman as a screen in the left circle, Winter fired a wrist shot over the glove of goaltender Garrett Beckwith.

Two-goal lead

Team White regained a two-goal lead with 4:42 left in the period. Janis Purins' shot from the right circle was stopped by goaltender Tyler Ross. Nick Kenney found the rebound on the left side and poked the loose puck into a partially open net for a 3-1 advantage.

Derek Graham closed the gap to 3-2 with a goal 43 seconds into the third period. Naaman Moorman made it 4-2 at 3:19 on the power play off a faceoff win in the right circle.

Alden Hirschfeld made it a one-goal game when he scored at the 11:52 mark, before Jackson Spivey forced the deadlock by scoring with 47.3 seconds left in regulation.

Registering assists for Team White were Adam Woods, J.D. Howard, Purins, Jason Simota, Nick Shkreli and Kenney.

Getting helpers for Team Orange were Winter, Hirschfeld, Graham, Trevor Shively, Kyle Richards and Andy Cramer.

The camp is open to the public and admission is free.
