Mathews' Ford breaks national mark for saves
The senior goalie boosted his career saves total to 1,142 a national record.
VIENNA Mathews senior goalie Brett Ford added his name to the national high school soccer record book Monday.
In a 1-0 loss to Badger, Ford collected 19 saves to give him 1,142 stops in his career, a national boys record.
The previous national record of 1,130 was set by Nick Rowe in 2000.
The one Badger shot not saved by Ford came with about 19 minutes to go in the game.
Lee Matson took a pass from Michael Rondini and scored from 7 yards out for the Braves (14-1, 8-0 Northeastern Athletic Conference).
The Mustangs are 4-10-1, 1-8-1.
Liberty 3, LaBrae 1
LIBERTY Ryan Karson scored a goal and assisted on another for Liberty in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Will Banner and Matt Britton scored Liberty's other goals, while Eric Saddle had two assists. Khalid Elwanni made five saves.
LaBrae scored on Mike Pratt's goal, which was assisted by Tyler Kuchta. Andrew Ozanich had nine saves.
Liberty outshot the Vikings, 23-10.
Girls
NEW MIDDLETOWN Salem's Zahra Scullion scored two goals to lead the Quakers to a 5-2 victory over Springfield.
Jessica Booth, Halle Hank and Dana Webb added a goal apiece for Salem (6-8-1), which led 4-2 at the break.
Breanne Mincher and Carrie Ritzler each scored for the Tigers (6-9).
Boardman 4, West Branch 2
BOARDMAN Jaimie Avona had two goals while Katie Stoll had one goal and one assist and Chloe Zidian one goal to lead Boardman (9-4-1), while Cheyene Khatib contributed an assist. Boardman goalie Lani Vlad had one save.
Taylor Kring had one of West Branch's goals while goalie Tami Pellman had six saves for the Warriors (5-7-1).
Badger 7, Liberty 0
KINSMAN Seven players scored for Badger. Sarah Dunfee, Lauren Hall, Taylor Phillips, Tara Sudon, Amelia Deraway, Tiffany Snider, and Shawna McNeely all scored for the Braves (8-6-1). Jenna Miller, Michelle Fitch, Lauren Snider, Deraway, Dunfee, and Sudon all had assists.
Liberty fell to 0-14.
Poland 1, Hubbard 1
POLAND Maureen Malone's 21st goal of the season on an assist from Jill Roemer lifted Poland into a 1-1 tie against Hubbard.
Ashley Bruce had the lone goal for Hubbard (8-6-2) on an assist from Liz Crafton.
Poland (11-1-2) goalie Pam Shure had two saves.
