Football team third
in Gateway poll
ST. LOUIS Youngstown State was tabbed third, just behind Northern Iowa and Illinois State, in the Gateway Conference preseason poll.
The Penguins, who have won two consecutive Gateway championships, received nine first-place votes, topped only by Northern Iowa's 11. Illinois State received seven and Southern Illinois had one.
Northern Iowa had 166 points, followed by Illinois State (160) and YSU (159). Southern Illinois was fourth, Western Illinois was fifth, Missouri State was sixth and Indiana State was seventh.
YSU also had six players named to the preseason all-conference team: tight end Derrick Bush, offensive lineman Brad Samsa, kicker Brian Palmer, defensive lineman Mychal Savage and linebacker James Terry were named first team, and tight end Louis Irizarry was named honorable mention.
The Penguins open the season Sept. 1 at Ohio State.
Campbell names A.D.
CAMPBELL The Campbell board of education approved the hiring of Frank Pinciaro as athletic director.
Pinciaro is a teacher and coach in the Campbell schools.
McDonald picks
football coaches
McDONALD The McDonald board of education has named the following as assistant coaches in the football program: A.J. Saul, Joe Celli, Tom Baker, Lee Evans, Robert Jones, Ray Manna, Steve Durbin and Ryan Witkoski.
Lady Warriors
meet Detroit Shock
DETROIT Members of the Mahoning Valley Lady Warriors AAU basketball team shared a day with the Detroit Shock earlier this month.
The Lady Warriors junior and senior high players played a game on the home court of the Shock, the reigning WNBA champions.
Then, the Lady Warriors met the members of the Shock and took in the game between the Shock and the Phoenix Mercury.

BOARDMAN The Boardman Tennis & Swim Club took a 14-9 exhibition tennis decision from East Liverpool Thompson Park.
Mark Davlin of Boardman racked up a 3-0 record to pace the winners.
Women to meet
at Wedgewood Lanes
YOUNGSTOWN The USBC Women's Bowling Association's annual meeting is July 24 at Wedgewood Lanes at 7 p.m.
Two directors will be elected for a term of three years and any member of the YBA may run for the position.
The office of 1st vice-president and sergeant-at-arms will also be voted on.
Current YBA directors who place their name in nomination for the positions must have been a director for six years.
Fitch will play at
Heidelberg College
KINSMAN Michelle Fitch, a recent graduate of Badger High School, will play soccer at Heidelberg College in the fall.
Fitch earned four varsity soccer letters at Badger and was picked all county three times.
Golden Gloves set
Friday in Campbell
CAMPBELL A Golden Gloves amateur boxing show will take place Friday at St. Joseph the Provider Church in Campbell.
There are 14 bouts scheduled on the card, beginning with a 100-pound tussle.
The 7:30 p.m. show is coordinated by the Castlo Police Athletic League.
High school golf
tune-up scheduled
YOUNGSTOWN Copeland Hills Golf Course will be the site of a high school tune-up tournament on Aug. 1. Play begins at 8 a.m.

Slippery Rock
volleyball honored
SLIPPERY ROCK The Slippery Rock Univ. volleyball team was picked as just one of 30 NCAA Div. II programs to achieve the GamePlan/American Volleyball Coaches Association "Team Academic Award".
It was the second consecutive year Slippery Rock won the award which is given to schools with a 3.3 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
