Beisel gets ready
for top swim show
INDIANAPOLIS Elizabeth Beisel won't bring any cuddly teddy bears to next year's Olympics. It will be tough enough carrying the title of America's next swimming prodigy. At 14, and barely old enough to remember Amanda Beard's second Olympics, the backstroke specialist is already being groomed as a future American star strange as it seems to her.
"I remember watching Amanda in the Olympics when I was probably 8 or something, and I was like 'That is so cool, I want to be there someday,"' she said.
Beisel may get there sooner than anyone, including herself, imagined.
Already a veteran of one world championship, Beisel's next big test will come at the Olympic Trials in June. If Beisel swims fast enough, she'll take her place alongside Beard, Janet Evans and Donna DeVarona as one of America's youngest swimming qualifiers.
Beisel's teammates are helping, advising her on what to expect and how to handle the attention heaped on teenage phenoms.
"Basically, the older swimmers have told me to have fun and focus on my race because you can't control anything else," she said. "I used to be like 'Oh, so-and-so went that fast, so I have to do this.' I'm trying to get better at that."
