Expos drop Scrappers with 8th-inning rally

Mahoning Valley stayed in first place in the Pinckney Division.

BURLINGTON, Vt. — Leonard Davis homered to highlight a four-run eighth inning as the Vermont Expos defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 5-2 Sunday in a New York-Penn League game at Centennial Field.

Behind the strong pitching of Justin Pekarek, the Scrappers (20-20) took a 1-0 lead after six innings.

Pekarek pitched six full innings, yielding just one hit and two walks. He struck out nine.

Mahoning Valley got on the board in the fourth inning when Chris Clem doubled to left field and came home on a throwing error.

After the Expos (13-27) tied the game 1-1 in the last of the seventh on a solo home run by Dee Brown, Mahoning Valley regained the advantage 2-1 in the eighth.

Matt Fornasiere walked and went to third on a double by Clem.

Cirilo Cumberbatch drove in Fornasiere with a sacrifice fly.

In the eighth frame the Expos used two walks, a fielder's choice, two stolen bases and a fielding error to go in front 3-2.

Davis followed with a two-run homer for the final score.

Clem led the Scrappers with three hits including two doubles while Jose Constanza added two singles.

The Expos were out-hit 8-3 but still managed to come back twice for the verdict.

Despite suffering its third straight setback, Mahoning Valley remained in first place in the NYPL's Pinckney Division standings.

Second-place Auburn (19-20) lost to Staten Island 2-1.

The Scrappers play at Vermont tonight and again Tuesday before an off day then begin a six-game homestand Thursday.

Two of the top teams in the McNamara Division — Staten Island (25-13) and Brooklyn (23-16) — will play the Scrappers at Eastwood Field this weekend.
