Boardman High's Vallos nabs All-America honors
Ohio State's Doug Datish and Toledo's John Greco were honorable mention.
Wake Forest senior Steve Vallos, a 2002 Boardman High graduate, was chosen as a first team All-American by Sports Illustrated after helping the Demon Deacons to a 10-2 record and their first Atlantic Coast Conference championship since 1970.
Vallos, a four-year starter for Wake Forest, was also a first team All-ACC selection after earning honorable mention all-conference last season. Vallos has started all 46 games in his four-year career.
Vallos was joined on SI's team by a former teammate at Boardman, Toledo junior lineman John Greco, who was named honorable mention All-America.
Greco, a 2003 Boardman graduate, also earned first team All-Mid-American Conference honors for the second straight season.
Greco started all 12 games for the Rockets and was named to the 2006 Lombardi Award preseason watch list for the nation's best down lineman/linebacker. He was the only Rocket on SI's list.
Ohio State
Ohio State senior center Doug Datish, a Howland High graduate, also earned honorable mention from SI.
The three-year starter was a first team All-Big Ten selection by both the coaches and the media after helping the Buckeyes to a 12-0 regular season and a berth in the national championship game.
Three Ohio State players made SI's first team, quarterback Troy Smith, offensive lineman Alex Boone and linebacker James Laurinaitis.
Defensive lineman Quinn Pitcock was named to the second team, while running back Antonio Pittman, cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and punt returner Ted Ginn Jr. were honorable mention selections.
One other Wake Forest player made the first team, kicker Sam Swank. Linebacker Jon Abbate and defensive back Josh Gattis earned honorable mention. For the complete list, visit. www.si.com.
