Perry again
earns honor

YOUNGSTOWN — For the third consecutive week, Youngstown State senior cornerback Jason Perry has been named a Gateway Conference Player of the Week.

This time, Perry was honored as the top Special Teams performer. He had been selected as the Defensive Player of the Week following the UC Davis and Missouri State contests.

Perry returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown and had four returns for 93 yards in YSU's 55-17 victory over Indiana State on Saturday. His 93 yards ranked as the sixth-best performance by a punt returner in school history.

His punt return for touchdown was the first by a Penguin since Jerald Burley returned a kick 77 yards for a score against Illinois State in 2001.

Perry has scored a touchdown in three straight games — no easy feat for a defensive back. He returned interceptions for touchdowns against UC Davis and Missouri State before returning a punt for a score in the final quarter against Indiana State.

He becomes the first Penguin to be named a league player of the week three times in the same season since P.J. Mays in 2002.

The Gateway Offensive Player of the Week was Southern Illinois running back Arkee Whitlock while the Defensive Player of the Week was Western Kentucky linebacker Jon Hodges.
