Fitch boys are district champion; McDonald girls are runner-up



HUBBARD — Austintown Fitch was district champion after rolling 5,035 during the high school boys competition at Bell-Wick Bowl last Saturday.

Other state-qualifying teams were Hubbard (5001), Boardman (4957), Vermilion (4956), Liberty (4942) and Massillon Perry (4932).

The top six teams and top six individuals have advanced to state, which is March 3 at Tiki Lanes in Lancaster.

Liberty is making its first state appearance.

The lone local individual boys qualifier was Champion's Jeff Dozier with 690.

Other team scores: Warren Harding (4894), Canton GlenOak (4782), Canton Timken (4778), Massillon Jackson (4727), Struthers (4706), Lakeview (4506), Ursuline (4490) and Cardinal Mooney (4471).

Among the area's qualifying teams, Liberty's Mike Dietz had the top set of 721, while Hubbard's Tom Jones rolled 703.

Falcon girls third

In the girls district at Midway Lanes in Akron, McDonald was district runner-up with 4,331, followed by Austintown Fitch (4305) and Niles (4294). Struthers was the sixth and final qualifying team with 4,220.

Garrettsville Garfield was district champion with 4,517 and Canton GlenOak (4285) was fifth.

McDonald is making its first state appearance.

Garfield's Sharissa Stamper was district champion after rolling 679, while Boardman's Ciarra Moran is the area's lone individual advancing without being on a qualifying team. Moran's set was 571.

The top six girls teams and top six individual girls not on a qualifying team also advance to the state in Lancaster on March 2.

The area's girls teams that failed to advance from district were: Boardman (4015), Warren Harding (3919), Canfield (3790), Hubbard (3763) and Chaney (3477).
