MILWAUKEE The Youngstown State men's basketball team can add another name to its holiday shopping list.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Paige Paulsen missed a potentially game-tying free throw with 1.9 seconds remaining Sunday, as YSU defeated the Panthers, 68-65, in a Horizon League game at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
It was the Penguins' first win on UWM's home court since Feb. 7, 1991.
YSU improved to 1-1 in the Horizon (4-6 overall) and captured only its third victory in the last 20 meetings against the three-time defending Horizon regular season champions.
"We're excited to come in and be able to do this on their floor," YSU coach Jerry Slocum said. "They obviously have a great tradition here. We inspire to be that."
Holding a 66-61 lead with 44 seconds remaining, the Penguins did all they could to gift wrap one for the Panthers.
YSU missed 3-for-4 free throws, got tied up for a jump ball on two consecutive inbound plays and allowed an open look directly underneath the basket with the game on the line.
With 1.9 seconds remaining and YSU holding a 66-64 edge, Penguin John Barber fouled Paulsen in the paint, giving UWM an opportunity to tie the game. Paulsen sank the first free throw only to leave the second attempt short off the front of the rim.
Davis seals victory
YSU's Byron Davis grabbed the loose rebound and was fouled with 0.4 seconds remaining. The junior guard knocked down both throws in sealing the Penguins' first victory over the Panthers since Feb. 14, 2004.
Slocum said the final minutes of the game went exactly as he drew it up. It was just the execution that was lacking.
"We got what we wanted [down the stretch]," Slocum said. "We went to the foul line three times in 40 seconds. That's really all you can do.
"We missed all three [times] and that was an opportunity for six points," Slocum said. "You've got to step up and make foul shots or the game is going to get close and that's exactly what happened."
YSU squeaked out the win despite a tough afternoon for senior guard Quin Humphrey.
The Horizon's leading scorer missed his first six shots and was held to only two points on 1-for-7 shooting in the first half.
Humphrey connected on three of his first four shots early in the second half including a pair of 3-pointers and finished with a quiet 14 points on 5-of-15 from the field.
"I just kept playing," Humphrey said. "I knew eventually my shot was going to start to fall. My teammates and my coaches kept giving me confidence. They just told me to keep shooting."
Roberts scores 21
Keston Roberts finished with a game-high 21 points and Davis added 12 points, six rebounds and six assists.
UWM (2-9, 0-1) led 32-30 at halftime before the Penguins responded with a 12-2 run to open the second half, and take a 42-34 advantage with 17:14 left.
In a game that appeared to be headed for a blowout, UWM rallied in the second half and took a 61-60 lead on an inside bucket from Kevin Massiah with 2:59 left. The Penguins battled back with a basket from Roberts and layup and free throw from Humphrey to make it 66-61 with 44.2 seconds left.
It was at that point when the lead which appeared plenty safe evaporated by the second.
"I thought both teams played extremely hard," Slocum said. "I think there was no quit from either team. Milwaukee got down and showed their character and played hard. When we could've folded, I thought we battled and did a good job."
Paulsen finished with 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the Panthers.
