Youngstown advances to Babe Ruth title game
Boardman's 14-year-old
softball team has won a state championship.
ZANESVILLE The Youngstown Babe Ruth 15-year-old baseball team defeated Newark, 6-3, to advance to the championship game of the state tournament Monday.
Matt Shelton hit a two-run single in the first inning for Youngstown. In the second, Anthony Raschilla hit a two-run double, Bo Slemons had an RBI single and Shane Parks hit an RBI double.
Slemons was also the winning pitcher, allowing five hits with two strikeouts. Joe Auzilia had two hits for Youngstown.
Earlier in the tournament, Youngstown defeated Mount Vernon 10-0. Parks allowed one hit over six innings.
Joe Aulizia had a triple, double and two singles, scoring three times with two RBIs. Slemons added a triple and double with four RBIs while Colin Hart and Matt Shelton added two singles apiece.
Babe Ruth 13s
SPRINGFIELD The Youngstown Babe Ruth all-stars won the state tournament.
Youngstown defeated Zanesville, 10-0; Mount Vernon, 7-4; and Cambridge, 11-4 and 13-3.
Youngstown advanced to the regional tournament in Illinois that begins on Aug. 2.
Jr. Little League
BOARDMAN The Boardman 14-year-old all-stars fell to North Canton, 5-1, Monday at Fields of Dreams.
Boardman (35-1) scored its run in the fifth inning when Tyler Walls singled and stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on Kenny Jones' single.
Tyler Blangero added a double for Boardman.
All of North Canton's runs were unearned.
Babe Ruth 16s
STRUTHERS A four-run first inning helped lift Hikes Point (Ky.) to a 10-8 victory over Rondinelli in the loser's bracket final of the 16-year-old Babe Ruth regional at Cene Park.
David Johns had two triples and a single to pace Kentucky while Brandon Brian and Andy Emery added two hits apiece.
Cory Hill, Pat O' Brien, Dru Fitzpatrick and Kevin McCulloh had two hits each for Rondinelli.
Tuesday, Hammond (Ind.) defeated Hikes Point 12-2 in the championship game. Mike Pokers tossed a complete game with four strikeouts for the win while Mike Kozlowski paced the attack with three hits. Andy Emery had two hits for Kentucky.
PONY 14s
BOARDMAN East Liverpool's 14-year-old team defeated Canfield, 6-3, to advance to the PONY regional tournament that begins on Friday at the Fields of Dreams.
Softball
Jr. Little League
ASHTABULA Boardman's 13-14 Junior League team will represent Ohio in the Central States regional in Akron Aug. 4-8.
Monday, Boardman defeated Portsmouth West, 14-0, to win the Ohio title.
Julie Sokol went the distance for the win, giving up two hits while striking out 12.
Nicola Gabriele led Boardman's 20-hit attack with three hits. Sokol, Danielle Petrus, Julie Olbrych, Brooke Meenachan, Alex DiDomenico and Vanessa Becker each had two hits.
Boardman jumped out early, scoring four runs in the first inning.
Minor League
POLAND The Poland Minor League (10U) all-stars won the District 2 championship and advanced to the state tournament in Bucyrus.
The team is 9-1 and has outscored its opponents 66-14.
Members of the team are Taylor Miokovic, Megan Katchmer, Ally Deemer, Arlia Duarte, Chloe Bush, Dani Rutana, Aleah Hughes, Amanda Kabetso, Claire Testa, Kathryn Wilson, Bridget Bobby, Abby Masluk, Kaylyn Donnadio and Katie Berndt.
Ron Miokovic is the manager and Zel Bush and Doug Kabetso are the coaches.
