Canfield's Sulick no-hits Niles



Poland trails the Cardinals in the MAC race.

CANFIELD— Lauren Sulick tossed her second no-hitter of the season in Canfield High's 10-0 softball victory over Niles Wednesday.

Melissa West sparked Canfield's (16-1, 9-0 Metro Athletic Conference) offense with a homer, triple and double. Jena Ervin had three hits and scored twice, Bianca Biondillo tripled and Jill Halfhill doubled.

Niles is 7-9, 3-4.

Poland 12, Howland 3

HOWLAND — Senior Jenna Susany and junior Allie Patton each had two-run homers for Poland (12-4, 7-1 MAC), which has won five straight games.

Senior Ashley Conger had three hits, freshman Megan Hirschbeck had three hits and Liz Maher, a junior, had two, two-run singles for the Bulldogs.

Maher (6-4) allowed one walk and struck out six.

Carly Sabat and Rachel Bixler both hit a pair of singles for Howland (9-7, 5-3 MAC).

Howland starter Abby Nicholas pitched the first four innings before Casey Haering threw the last three.

Fitch 11, Chaney 1

AUSTINTOWN — Winning pitcher Heidi Soriano tripled and doubled to drive in three runs for the Falcons (6-7).

Also with doubles and two RBIs were Haley Martinelli and Jena Baun. Kate Ferree and Sam Kozbial each had RBI doubles.

Lakeview 6, Newton Falls 4

CORTLAND — Lex Sidley had two doubles and a single for three RBIs for Lakeview, which registered three errors in the fifth inning.

In upcoming key TAC games for Lakeview, the Bulldogs (13-1, 9-0) play at Girard on Friday and at Newton Falls on May 16.

Jen Baker added two singles for the winners.

Sophomore Stephanie Blair had four singles and Emily Montgomery had a triple and double for Newton Falls (13-7, 8-2).

In a matchup of two of the better pitchers in the TAC, Abbey Bensing (7-1) bested Blaine Chapman (8-2). Bensing registered seven strikeouts and didn't walk a batter while Chapman struck out three and walked five.

At the plate, Chapman had two singles.

Hubbard 5, Girard 2

GIRARD — Kim Budd had two hits, including a double, and Hubbard (13-8, 7-4 TAC) used a four-run fourth to top Girard.

Aly Moliterno had two hits for the Indians (5-12, 1-8).

Liberty 4, Brookfield 3

LIBERTY — Ali House had two hits and scored the game-tying run in the seventh for Liberty (6-8, 5-5 TAC), which added another run top Brookfield (0-10, 0-8).

House led off with a base hit in the seventh, advanced to second on a bunt by Jessie Szakacs and scored on Katie Greaf's single.

Greaf then scored from first on a throwing error on a grounder by Ashley Hackett. Melissa Dykes added three hits and two stolen bases.

LaBrae 4, Champion 1

CHAMPION — Stepfanie Higgins gave up one hit over five innings, followed by her twin sister, Lindsey Higgins, who gave up two more for LaBrae.

Also throwing a three-hitter was Champion's Morgan White with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Stepfanie Higgins, a senior, struck out two and gave up four walks. Lindsey Higgins recorded five strikeouts.

At bat, Stepfanie Higgins doubled, while Angelica Pugh and Ericka Stratakis added singles for the Vikings.

Jessica Frantz had two singles, while Katie Chandler had the only other hit for Champion (6-7, 2-6 TAC).

Mooney 5,
Steubenville Catholic Central 0

STEUBENVILLE — Chrissy Porter's double broke a scoreless tie when she knocked in Mara Palombaro and Katie Hughes, both of whom had singled in the fourth inning for Mooney (17-4).

The inning's third run crossed when Meghan Williams delivered pinch-runner Cheryl Guyer.

Freshman Margo Ucchino had a two-run double in her first varsity at-bat in the seventh inning.

Porter, also a freshman, struck out 10, walked one and only allowed three singles to improve to 12-3.

Catholic Central is 11-12.

Western Reserve 18, Southern 1

SALINEVILLE — Cassie Zimmerman and Elizabeth Srock each had three hits and three RBIs for Western Reserve (13-9, 10-2 Inter Tri-County League Tier Two) in a Tuesday game.

Zimmerman doubled twice, while Srock and Macy Marra each had one. Marra and McKenzie Mowery each finished with two hits. Brittany Boyer (6-4) struck out eight and allowed two hits.
