NILES — Mother Nature finally caught up with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

The Scrappers had several rain delays at home and one game shortened by rain, but until Thursday night they hadn't had a game canceled by the weather.

The contest between the Scrappers and the Jamestown Jammers never got started Thursday, and after a two-hour delay was finally called at 9:10 p.m.

The game has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader for Saturday with the first game getting underway at 5:05 p.m.

Both games will be scheduled for seven innings.

The two teams will meet in their regularly scheduled game tonight at 7:05 at Eastwood Field.

Heavy downpour

A heavy downpour came just before the scheduled starting time and over an hour later the field tarp was removed, but all the water from the tarp created a swamp-like condition in the left field area.

Both managers, Rouglas Odor of the Scrappers and Bo Porter of Jamestown, didn't feel the field was playable and after contacting the New York-Penn League officials the decision was made to call the game.

Crucial series

The series is a crucial one in the Pinckney Division of the NYPL since the Scrappers (23-19) hold down first place, but with just a one-game lead over the Jammers (21-19).

Rookie Kyle Collina, who was brought up Thursday from Class A Rookie League Burlington, was scheduled to make his first start with the Scrappers.

Collina, a Bethlehem, Pa., native, was signed as an undrafted free agent this year by the Indians. He made nine appearances, three as a starter and was 0-1 before coming to the Scrappers.

His addition to the roster (Collina arrived at Youngstown Airport at 12:30 p.m.) prompted Odor to juggle his starting rotation.

If Collina gets the call tonight against the Jammers, then Mike Eisenberg will start the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday. Josh Tomlin will pitch the second game.

And Erik Stiller wouldn't pitch until the Scrappers open a three-game series at State College Sunday.

Thursday was "Buck Night" at Eastwood Field and a good crowd was on hand. Many stayed right to the end.
