Mayer couldn't have scripted this start-finish

Marty Mayer is very low-key about his start-and-finish 300s for the 2006-2007 season.

True, they're just two perfect games lost in many thrown on area lanes during the season, but Mayer's were unique.

The 58-year-old West Sider rolled a 300 during his first game in September and his last in April.

"It's one of those weird events that happen," Mayer said matter-of-factly.

The first 300 was the day after Labor Day in the D & R Garage Door League at Wedgewood.

"It was the very first game on the first night of competition," Mayer said of his fourth career perfect game.

Then, bowling in the Youngstown Steel/Mopar League at Boardman Lanes April 11, Mayer finished the season with 211-224-300.

The D & R and Steel/Mopar leagues are two days apart, but Mayer also bowls in between on Wednesdays in UAW at Wedgewood. He was full-time in all three for 2006-2007.

Unaware

"At first, I never realized it," Mayer said of his D & R 300.

"It was the first night and I was BS-ing with the guys about what they did all summer. Then all of the sudden, I realized what I had in the 10th frame. Fortunately, I was able to throw three more [strikes]."

His first game was thrown with a Track ball and his last with a Buzzsaw.

Mayer was more aware of the circumstances leading up to his Mopar 300, the fifth of his career.

"I got better each game," Mayer said. "I made a little adjustment here and there and, except for going Brooklyn on my last ball, the rest of the shots were pretty good."

Mayer has been bowling in D & G and UAW for 10 years and Steel/Mopar for three years.

Work-wise, Mayer has been with I-Dee-X for about 40 years.

The industrial supply house sells machine shop supplies to other machine shops.

After working at I-Dee-X Inc. for several years, he finally bought the business.

Mayer estimated the number games he bowled from Sept. 2006 to April, 2007 in his three leagues combined.

Over 33 weeks, he figured on 99 games in each league.

Guess what total number that rounds out to?

300.

Nuzzo has 300-837

Joe Nuzzo's 300-837 led Shooting Gallery at Holiday, where Jim Stockman had 803 in Variety Mixed of which J.D. Transportation won fourth quarter with Diana Johngrass, Jim Johngrass, Betty Stockman and Jim Stockman.

Chris Judd had 813 in Max Belchyk Classic at Holiday April 12.

Some season-ending 300s sprang up by Nick Gabrick in Sanko Studio/ITAM Catering at Holiday, Edward Gould in Original Church at Camelot April 17 and Jim Wellington in Excalibur/Monday Knights, also at Camelot. Both Gabrick's and Wellington's came April 23.

Josh Hettrick's 227 and 267 were bookends for a Kelley-Robb Funeral Home Classic-leading 761 the night of April 19 at Bell-Wick.

It's not a big league, so when a 299 is rolled, it's noticed. That's what Duane Beatty had in St. Dominic Men April 29 when his set was 783. It was the highest single and second-highest series rolled during 2006-07. Dennis Lowry had 789 back in September.

Rob Rosenberg's 298-743 led Sunday Nite Early Birds at Boardman where Dale Barringer's 290-723, by far, took the cake in the Sunday School League.

Fran Miller has 277-726

On April 17, Fran Miller's 277 single and 726 three-game set paced Wedgewood Ladies Trio, whose overall best four-game score was Teri Haefke's 916.

Marla Chicase had 280-705 to lead Thursday Night Matchplay at Amron April 5 and Andrew Watterson had 280-691 to rule Camelot Majors April 21.

Rich's Massotherapy of Norm Phillips, Terrance Dill, Ray Barnett, Jeff Fuller and Rich Pilla won F.D. Mason Classic's fourth quarter at Camelot.

Floyd's won its first-ever championship as the team of Matt Beilstein, Dan Beilstein, Rick Kornbau, Elijah Dow, Willie Archer, Greg Seabolt and Mike Toda claimed the Doughton Businessmen's title at Bell-Wick.

Floyd's won its divisional rolloff, then outlasted Mulholland Roofing in the finals.

Mulholland was led by Brian Wilson's first-ever 300 to start the night in divisional play. Scott Trigg, Pat Frazer, Jim Musser, Dave Miller and Al Cattoi are other Mulholland bowlers.

Kelley-Robb Funeral Home fourth-quarter winners were Joey's Team in the Kelley Div. and Kelley-Robb Funeral Home in the Robb Div.

In a rare sweep of both halves in the TNBA Church League at Holiday, Friendship reigned with members Darlene Hawkins, Shirley Casey, Lillie M. Fleming and George Waker.

Carmels of Jan Ugran, Barb Gaudio, Dolly Ponzani and Mariann Morway were rolloff winners of Camelot's Applewood League.
