Doubledays pull off win after Scrappers' mistake
Auburn's lead over Mahoning Valley grew to five games.
AUBURN, N.Y. Auburn's Victor Santana scored the winning run in the ninth inning on first baseman Chris Nash's mental blunder as the Doubledays edged Mahoning Valley, 3-2, on Tuesday.
With the game tied, 2-2, Santana singled, advanced on Luis Sanchez's sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch by reliever Dallas Cawiezell (0-1).
With one out, Adam Calderone hit a grounder to Nash, who took the ball to first as Santana raced home.
Manny Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the first and Santana walked and scored on an error in the second for the Doubledays (40-26), who lead the second-place Scrappers (34-30) by five games in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division.
Mahoning Valley starter Michael Eisenberg yielded two runs one earned on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts over five frames.
Nash and Karexon Sanchez each went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Scrappers
Michael Barbara (1-0) retired the last four batters for the win.
Doubledays starter Marc Rzepczynski allowed two runs one earned on five hits and two walks while striking out four over 52/3 frames. The left-hander, who turns 22 today, has fanned 30 in his last 22 innings.
