Blizzard pulls away to top Thunder



Mahoning Valley fell to 4-6 with the 54-39 defeat.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Mahoning Valley Thunder gave up two late touchdowns to fall to the Green Bay Blizzard 54-39 on Friday night.

Thunder quarterback Mike Schneider hit DeMarcus Mathes for a 30-yard TD pass with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter to pull Mahoning Valley within two, 41-39.

But Green Bay's Danny Donaldson returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards for a touchdown to give the Blizzard a 48-39 lead with 9:27 left.

Green Bay put the game out of reach with a minute left when quarterback Gino Guidugli connected with Donaldson for a 22-yard touchdown.

Mahoning Valley (4-6), which snapped a five-game losing streak last Saturday with a 57-20 win over the Cincinnati Jungle Kats, got on the board first with an 8-yard TD pass from Schneider to Chris Archie.

The Blizzard tied the game at 7 with a TD pass from Guidugli to Gerald Harris. The Thunder made it 13-7 on a 31-yard TD strike from Schneider to Mathes. After an 8-yard TD run by Guidugli gave Green Bay a 14-13 lead, the Thunder took their final lead of the game on a 22-yard TD pass from Schneider to Kenneth Johnson to make it 19-14.

Green Bay then scored three straight touchdowns to take control of the game, 35-19, with nine minutes left in the third quarter. Mahoning Valley closed to within three, 35-32, on two more Schneider TD passes to set up the fourth quarter dramatics. Schneider finished with six touchdowns.

Mahoning Valley returns home to play the Quad City Steamwheelers at 7 p.m. next Saturday at the Chevy Centre.
