NOTEBOOK | Scrappers vs. ValleyCats
A little bit square: It was SpongeBob SquarePants night at Eastwood Field Monday, but the afternoon rainstorms may have scared a few fans away from the park. Just 2,288 attended the game, about 1,500 below the Scrappers' season average. Mahoning Valley is averaging 3,759 fans per home game this season, which is sixth-best in the 14-team New York-Penn League. The Brooklyn Cyclones lead the lead with 8,030 fans per game. Only about 300 fans stuck around for the finish of Monday's game, which had a 61-minute rain delay and lasted into the 11th inning.
Who's hot, who's not: Cirillo Cumberbatch was batting .310 with four RBIs over his last eight games entering Monday's contest. He entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the ninth. Jared Goedert was batting .303 with six runs scored in the last nine games. Pitcher Josh Tomlin was 2-0 in his last two starts, surrendering three earned runs in 11 innings. Adam Davis had seven hits in his last 36 at-bats. Outfielder Jason Denham is sixth in the NYPL in batting with a .319 average, while teammate Andy Lytle is 10th with a .311 mark. Luis Valdez is fifth in ERA (2.21) and has a 6-3 record. Tomlin is seventh in ERA (2.25) and has a 5-1 mark.
All-Star Scrappers: Tomlin is one of six Scrappers who were chosen for Wednesday's All-Star game in Aberdeen, Md. The others are Denham, Lytle, catcher Matt McBride and pitchers Valdez and Neil Wagner. Today is an off day across the NYPL.
Up next: The Scrappers will begin a three-game series at Staten Island Thursday and return home for a five-game homestand against Batavia (two games) and Jamestown. There are 22 games remaining on the Scrappers' schedule.
