'Hounds suffer first loss in shootout with Rayz

Youngstown's seven-game win streak was snapped by Corpus Christi.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Youngstown SteelHounds suffered their first defeat of the season Sunday, 3-2 in a shootout to the Corpus Christi Rayz.

The Rayz (2-5-1) are 6-0-3 all-time against the SteelHounds, who are eight games into their season-opening 14-game road trip.

Youngstown (7-0-1) returns to the ice Friday night in Austin, Texas, at 8:05 p.m.

Sunday, Eric Przepiorka gave the SteelHounds a 1-0 lead just 1 minute, 37 seconds into the game with his fourth goal of the season, and Adam Smyth added his third goal in three games to put Youngstown ahead 2-0 at the first intermission.

The SteelHounds nearly kept that lead throughout the second period, but Corpus Christi's Evan Stoflet scored his second goal of the season with 38 seconds remaining to slice Youngstown's lead in half.

The SteelHounds held that lead until 2:37 remained in the game, when the Rayz's Adam Hogg took advantage of a two-on-one and beat goaltender Andy Franck, forcing overtime.

The shootout ended 2-1 with Corpus Christi's Brent Howarth beat Franck in the fourth round.

Both teams finished 0-for-8 on the power play and Youngstown outshot the Rayz 37-34.

Youngstown's seven straight victories to start the season still set a franchise record, and the SteelHounds can still match the team record of 11 straight unbeaten games, which was set in February 2007.

Saturday

AUSTIN — The SteelHounds defeated the Austin Bats 5-2 Saturday night.

Petr Pohl scored his fourth goal of the season, unassisted at 1:31 into the game and Adam Smyth knocked in a power play goal 10 minutes later to put Youngstown up 2-0.

Jason Tessier cut the deficit to one for the Bats with his fourth of the season to end the first period.

Youngstown made it 3-1 on Erik Johnson's first goal of the season at 4:09 of the second period, on an assist by Steve Birnstill, his first.

The SteelHounds got third-period goals from Kevin Jarman (from Jeff Alcombrack) and Chris Richards (an empty-netter).

Chris Richards stopped 27 shots and Eric Przepiorka had two assists.
