Scrappers
Lemonhead: James Lowry arrived at Eastwood Field Thursday with a full head of hair. By the time he left the stadium, the 20-year-old Youngstown resident was sporting a clean-shaven scalp. Lowry, a lively Scrappers concession worker, made a sales pitch as he walked through the stands. If he sold at least 125 lemon shakes during the course of the night, he would shave his head in honor of Bald Is Beautiful Night. The customers responded, and Lowry immediately was at the mercy of a clipper-wielding Scrappers employee. Amused fans were able to witness the buzzing event on the giant Eastwood Field video board. Lowry offered a new pitch Friday. "Buy a spoon for three bucks, and I'll throw in a lemon chill for free."
Lake County Scrappers? Fans wishing to catch a glimpse of their favorite Scrappers of the past might consider taking a trip to Eastlake. The Lake County Captains, a Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, have nine former Scrappers on their roster. The players include; Alan Brech, Luis Valdez, Josh Tomlin, Matt McBride, Adam Davis, Beau Mills, Fernando Pacheco, Cirilo Cumberbatch and Jason Denham. Former Scrappers are helping the Indians' minor league affiliates put together an impressive summer. Buffalo, Akron, Kinston, and Lake County own a combined record of 245-192.
Attendance upswing: Scrappers attendance has declined in each of the past seven years. In 2000, Eastwood Field welcomed a single-season record 206,287 fans an average of 5,429 fans per home contest. Last season, a total of 129,719 fans (3,606 per game) passed through the turnstiles. However, '07 shows an increase. Through 22 home games, Eastwood Field has welcomed 87,850 fans an average of 3,993 per contest.
Injury update: Scrappers outfielder Juan Valdez has not played since July 27 because of a sprained ligament in his left thumb. Valdez suffered the injury while making a diving catch at Williamsport. Valdez's injury will be re-evaluated in approximately two weeks. The Puerto Rican native was batting .319 with four home runs and 26 RBIs.
