Shelton homers for area winners



The 14-year-old team remains unbeaten in North Carolina.

WILSON, N.C. — Matt Shelton's solo home run in the sixth inning was the difference as the Youngstown 14-year-old All-Stars defeated Meridian, Miss., 4-3, Tuesday at the Babe Ruth World Series.

A bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning helped Youngstown jump out to a 3-0 lead.

After Anthony Raschilla singled, Raul Pizzaro walked and moved up when Shelton singled. Bo Slemons walked to score Raschilla with Youngstown's first run.

Pizzaro scored on a wild pitch, then Shane Parks singled to score Shelton.

Meridian scored three times in the fifth inning to tie the game.

Youngstown finished pool play with a 4-0 record and earned a bye in the first round of the championship bracket. Youngstown's next game will be played Friday.

Meridian fell to 0-3.

15-year-olds

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. — Jefferson Parish, La., scored eight runs in the first four innings Monday to pin an 8-1 defeat on the Youngstown All-Stars at the 15-year-old Babe Ruth World Series.

A three-run first inning was the difference for Jefferson Parish (3-1). Mason Katz's double off the top of the right-field wall scored Cory Guidry and Chad Guidry. Katz then scored on a groundout.

In the second inning, Ryan Holstein reached on an error and scored on an error by an outfielder for a 4-0 lead.

Tyler Johns' lead-off double in the third inning led to Jefferson Parish scoring two more runs. Jordan Rittiner contributed a RBI single while pinch runner Perry Provenzano scored on a wild pitch.

Youngstown scored its run in the fourth inning after consecutive singles by Jaymee Shephard and Todd Kibby. Shephard scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Bagoly.

Kibby was selected as Youngstown's game MVP. Ryan Holstein received the same honor for Jefferson Parish.
