Davidson turns back Massillon Jackson for state soccer title
Hilliard Davidson won its first state soccer title with a strong first half, 2-1.
COLUMBUS Jon Reasoner and Colby Catlett each scored first half goals and Hilliard Davidson held on for a 2-1 win over Massillon Jackson in the Division I boys state soccer championship Friday night.
Davidson (18-2-2) won its first state soccer title by dominating the first half with seven shots on goal to Jackson's none.
Reasoner's goal came in the 16th minute as he held off a defender from the top of the box.
Cody St. Clair set up Catlett's goal in the 25th minute with a pass to the right side of the box. With two defenders on him and another nearby, Catlett left-footed it into the goal.
Jackson (19-2-3) goalie John Brubach made a diving save off a Catlett penalty kick in the opening minutes of the second half.
His teammates followed that up at the 52 minute mark when Jamie Taylor crossed the ball from the left side of the field into the box. Dustin Kiaski headed the ball down and Evan McCreary knocked it in.
Division III boys
COLUMBUS Anthony Canestraro's goal six minutes into overtime gave Springfield Catholic Central a 2-1 win over Gates Mills Hawken.
Stefan Latham played the ball from the left wing with a crossover to the right side of the box. Canestraro took it from 13 yards out and right-footed the ball in at the near post.
Hawken (18-2-2) scored first off a Jake McKay goal in the 26th minute. Springfield Catholic Central (21-1-1) struck back a minute later, with Stephen Kearns scoring off a loose ball from the top of box.
The Division III game was a rematch of the 2001 final, also won by Springfield Catholic Central.
