Joanne Jennie Popovich, 86
YOUNGSTOWN Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 17, at 10 a.m. at the Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market St. in Boardman followed at 10:30 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Stephen Popovich at St. Matthias Church for Mrs. Joanne Jennie Popovich, 86, who entered into eternal rest surrounded by family on Dec. 13, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at Select Specialty Hospital after a brief illness.
Jennie Popovich was born on June 26, 1923, in Youngstown, a daughter of George and Helen Sinkovich Bernardich.
She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and then worked at GE Madza Lamp Plant for eight years.
Jennie married Frank Popovich on Oct. 25, 1947 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church.
During her time as a homemaker, she was an active member of St. Matthias Church and of the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild, Sacred Heart and Rosary Society, Golden Echoes of St. Matthias, and American Croatian Citizens Club.
She will always be remembered for her pride in her Croatian heritage, love for Tamburitza music, and kolo dancing.
To cherish the memory of her beautiful smile, kindness, and tenderness, she leaves her husband, Frank. She is also survived by her son, George of Youngstown; daughter, Patricia and her husband, Stephen Basic Jr. of Poland; her grandson, Dr. Stephen Basic and his wife, Julie of Charlottesville, Va.; granddaughter, Christen and her husband, David Maurer of Poland; brother, Charles Bernardich of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Catherine and her husband, Frank DeNiro of Youngstown; brother-in-law, Thomas and his wife, Nancy Popovich; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Schraider, Pauline Popovich and Dorothy Bernardich; and 12 nieces and nephews and their families, as well as many dear friends.
Jennie was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Rose; infant son, Frank; brothers, Frank, George and Peter; and sisters, Mary Bernat and Helen Bonwick.
Calling hours are today, Dec. 16, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, where the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild and the Sacred Heart and Rosary Society will hold a combined prayer service at 4:45 p.m.
