Vincent J. Toro, 85

HOWLAND – There will be funeral services Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at 9:30 a.m. at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Church with Fr. Donald E. King officiating for Vincent J. Toro, 85, who passed away Friday morning from cardiopulmonary failure at Autumn Hills.
Vincent J. Toro was born Oct. 8, 1921 in Warren, the son of Alfonso and Flora Yannucci Toro Sr.
He was a 1940 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and attended Youngstown State University and the Dana School of Music. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, serving as an instructor in the Medical Corp. at Ft. Sam Houston, and was a member of the U.S. Army Dance Band during his service.
Mr. Toro retired after 41 years from the Copperweld Steel Corp., where he was the assistant superintendent of shipping; he was previously the director of personnel. He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church where he was an usher and greeter.
He was very active in the Greater Western Reserve Council of the Boy Scouts of America, where he was an instructor of first aid and CPR. He had been a co-director of the annual Pro-Am Golf Tournament for the Boy Scouts and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.
He was an avid golfer and member of the Trumbull Country Club. He had belonged to the American Federation of Musicians, was an accomplished musician and piano player and had played in various local dance bands. He also enjoyed traveling and fishing.
His wife, the former Grace G. Orlando, whom he married Feb. 13, 1943, preceded him in death July 15, 1994.
Survivors include two sisters, Irene Goff of Howland and Mary Louise (Dr. Carl Kent) Brandeberry of Ashtabula; a brother, Alfred J. (Joan) Toro of Howland; his special friend, Antoinette “Toni” Curcio of Warren; two sisters-in-law, Flora Natale and Helen George, both of Warren; and several nieces and nephews.
Beside his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Alfonso Toro Jr.; and a sister, Gloria Barnes.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the chapel.
Entombment will be at Crown Hill Burial Park.
