Gladys Penny, 77

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be home going services Saturday, Dec. 1, at 10 a.m. at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home for Mrs. Gladys Penny, 77, who passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Gladys, affectionately known as “Ma,” was born Oct. 29, 1930 in Hahira, Ga., a daughter of the late Sylvester and Essie Mae Miller Register.
She was a graduate of Hahira High School and attended Fort Valley State College in Fort Valley, Ga. She married Vernon Penny Sr. Nov. 17, 1949 and they relocated to Youngstown.
Gladys worked many years at Foy’s BBQ Restaurant and Catherine’s Dress Shop. She was a longtime member of the Greater Friendship Baptist Church, where she sang in its Marion Choir.
She was a loving, kind, and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Gladys enjoyed baking and cooking for her family. She was well-known for her famous “Cream Cake.”
Gladys leaves to forever hold dear her memories, her former husband, Vernon Penny Sr.; five sons, Vernon Penny Jr. and Charles Penny Sr., both of Youngstown, Rev. Calvin (Linda) Penny of Pittsburgh, Ory Lynn (Vivian) Penny Sr. of Akron and Ronald (Donna) Penny of Conyers, Ga.; two daughters, Sherrie (Bernard) Brown of Austintown and Jacqueline Penny-Lynn of Youngstown; two sisters, Flora Eady of Hahira and Verma Lee Walker of Flint, Mich.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnie and Barnie Register.
Friends may call Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
